Interview with my used bookstore owner. giveaway contest one book autographed by Gena Showalter
I have a wonderful used bookstore in my town its called Bettie's the owner is Kim Bouce. I asked her for an interview, so you could get a little in site on how one is operated and maybe buy some books;)

Laurie-Would you tell us a little about yourself?
Kim-Hi, my name is Kim Bouce. I have been married for 22 years to my husband, Danny and we have 2 boys, Daniel 15 and Jason 10.
Laurie-Why did you decide on a used bookstore?
Kim- I have always wanted to open my own business and as I love to read when the opportunity became available I decided to go for it.

Laurie-How does a used bookstore work?
Kim- I get all my books from my customers. They bring in the books and I give them a 1/4 of the list price as credit and I sale the books in the store for half price.
Laurie- What books do you take in?
Kim- I take in almost all the authors. I need them to keep some of everyone in the store. There are a few older authors who have passed away that we don't take anymore.

Laurie- What is the bestselling genre?
Kim-Romance is still the best selling genre. Paranormal is becoming more popular everyday and is selling very well. Westerns are always great sellers for men and women. Christian fiction is also very popular.

Laurie-What is the hardest to get genre?
6 Right now Paranormal is the hardest to get genre and I would like to have a lot more. Most paranormal readers seem to keep their books.

Laurie- How much time does it take to run the store?
Kim- It doesn't take much time to open or close the store. In the evenings I have to total the amount or credit given each day and total my drawer.
Laurie- How does this work?
Kim-All the books taken in that day have to be put on the shelf's in innovatory in our stock room. Stocking is done daily and often after hours. There is times when you have to come in on your days off but theirs parts of owning your own business.
Laurie, Ky and Lover of Romance all wants to know do you read your books that should be on a shelf?
9. I love owning a bookstore. I love talking to people everyday about the books they read and how they liked or hated them. Of course, one of the best is getting first pick of all the books that come in. That's one of best perks of owning your own bookstore.

Now do you need some books? Kim would be happy to help just call her at the store or email her your list.

I had posted a post a few weeks back about questions on this interview. I have 4 ladies who gave me questions to pick from, I wanted to let you know, I going to give each one of you an extra entry. I have had a few things go wrong on my end on this interview. If you see your question with my name beside it, I sorry some of the questions got mixed together and after the fact I had no clue who was who's.

I would love to run a used bookstore! My cousin and I have talked about opening one with a coffee bar/bakery attached (she's a baker, not me!). I would love to work somewhere that I was surrounded by books all day.
I love shopping at used bookstores. I'm pretty picky about a book's condition. Do you have to turn many books away for being in poor condition? I think the used bookstore in my town with take anything, but I'm sure some of it ends up in the recycling bin!

Showcasing your local store like this, this is what it is all about!!!!!!
No need to enter me... Just wanted to let you guys know that you rock!!!!
I think it is fantastic that you have a bookstore like that in your community. We really only have half priced books and that just isn't the same. What a great career to have :)

Wow, this place looks like heaven. I really wish that we would have stores like this in Germany.
Don't add me in the giveaway because I'm not from the US.
I wonder, because of the downturn in the economy, do you have more customers than you used to?
It has always been a dream of mine, to own a book store.

Oh my! We have a section of town called the "book mile" which has four used book stores, however our stores are not nearly as large as Kim's! I wish I lived nearby. :)

I've always dreamed of owning a used book store - getting first crack at the books is my idea of heaven. Where I live, there are lots of used book stores, but they tend to look down on you if you read romance so it's no fun to go there.

JennJ- Thanks for doing that. Your wonderful
My favorite place! I love the used book store in town and am trying hard not to work there. I have enough books in my house to stock one already. Until recently, I worked at a library and that turned out to be dangerous. I found out about new authors and signed up for blogs to keep up with what was available. Now I have more books than ever. I don't have any of these books yet.

This book store looks similar to one my sis-in-law goes to sometimes. hm. Not sure it's the same one though, I've never paid attention to the name of it, I hear "book store" and that's all I need to know. lol. Loved the interview. Sorry I haven't been around much of late, this past week has been.... *sighs* I'm ready for the summer to be over, lets just say that. LOL.

Thank you so much Laurie! Love your blog, I'm so glad to be part of it!
I want to thank everyone for the wonderful response to Bettie's Books, and to me:)Wish you guys lived close, would love to meet you all! It's a real joy to be around others who love books as much as we do! If your down this way come visit us:)
We have a great bunch of customers, have lots of fun talking books..LOL..After all, you can't have to many books:)..Hubby says if I don't stop bringing books home the house will sink..LOL..I just go look at all my wonderful books and drool:)
Having a book store of my own is a lot of work but it's a lot of fun! I love my job - love my customers. It's not everyday you get a dream come true. So guys whatever your dreams are, I wish you the best at finding them!
Debbie - I know we get new customers every day, and that's a good thing in todays econamy. We do have very loyal customers..I'm thankful for each one of them, new and old!)
Diana - Yes we do turn down books for that reason. More than I would like, but not as many as you would expect in a used book store. We take new and old books if we need them. But there is a big difference in a book that looks like a truck ran over it - LOL
Leni - As of now no, were thinking about trying our hand at..What do you guys think? Might get our good friend Jenn to help us out:)..We have received a few letters from people, they sent us a list of books they wanted us to fill if we had them. We did, so we worked out shipping and price of books. We were happy to do it for them! They are now customers:)
JenM - So sorry about your book store hope you find some place that's fun,and full of wonderful romance books, with people who read and talk romance!
Thanks again everyone for the wonderful comments and warm response. You guys have made this new book store owner smile!
Wishing you all lots of luck on giveaway! Have a great summer!
(Happy reading everyone)
Kim:)
Thanks for all the comments. I will have the winner up in the next day or two.
