Malibu, California—home to rock-and-roll gods and movie stars, the beautiful, the rich . . . and vampires.

Powerful and charismatic, Raphael is a Vampire Lord, one of the few who hold the power of life and death over every vampire in existence. Thousands call him Master and have pledged absolute loyalty on their very lives. But when, in a brazen and deadly daylight attack, a gang of human killers kidnaps the one female vampire he’d give his life for, Raphael turns to a human investigator to find his enemies before it’s too late.

Cynthia Leighton is smart, tough and sexy, a private investigator and former cop who’s tired of spying on cheating spouses and digging out old bank accounts. When Raphael asks for her help in tracking down the kidnappers, Cyn’s happy to accept. But she soon realizes her greatest danger comes not from the humans, but from Raphael himself.

Battling Russian mobsters and treacherous vampires, and betrayed by those they trusted, Cyn and Raphael find themselves fighting for their lives while caught up in a passion of blood and violence that is destined to destroy them both.

Ms. Reynolds has struck gold with her Vampires in America Series. RAPHAEL is a fast-moving, page-turning delight. It is an exhilarating tale of love, lust, and lies.

Cynthia Leighton (Cyn) is a resilient private investigator, and she’s growing bored with her usual clients. She has done some menial work for the local vamp community, and she jumps at the chance to work for the West Coast Vampire Lord, Raphael, when he offers her a job. I like Cyn – so very much. She is a determined, independently wealthy, sassy, kick-ass-and-take-names heroine. However, she has a heart of gold and is starved for love.

The scene when Cyn first meets Raphael is priceless. Here is just a little snippet of that action:

She glanced up, then jumped to her feet, her Glock 17 out of her shoulder holster faster than thought and held before her in a standard two handed grip. Pushing her chair away without looking, she moved as far back as possible, trying to put some distance between herself and the strange vampires now standing in her office. Her finger dropped to the trigger, depressing it just enough to click off the safety.

There are two instances in the book that use flashback to illustrate Raphael’s history. They play an integral part of who he has become and provide additional insight to the kidnapped vampire. Lord Raphael is the ultimate vampire alpha. He rules his territory with a tight, but reasonable fist. And he is so very protective of his children and whatever else he considers “mine”.

As the investigation heats up, so does the relationship between Cyn and Raphael. Unfortunately, Cyn doesn’t feel the same way and wants to stay as far away from Raphael as possible. She doesn’t want to put her heart on the line; only to have it ripped apart and shredded. This one I just couldn’t resist:

Raphael searched the crowd with a restless gaze, his body hard and ready, rage riding the surface of lust pounding in his veins, driving him to sink his teeth into the sweet warmth of a woman’s blood and his cock into the wet heat between her legs. But the one he hungered for wasn’t here. She was miles away, hiding behind her steel door and her fragile resistance.

Oh yes, there is plenty of action in RAPHAEL! At one point, at the end of a very violent and grisly fight with the bad guys, the heightened passions of Raphael and Cyn are too much for them to deny. And hot damn - Ms. Reynolds makes this scene thrive! As Cyn is hell-bent on finding the kidnapped vampire (and since she doesn’t lollygag around, waiting for help), some of her actions put her in very precarious positions. Mix in Raphael’s machinations, stir in a dash of betrayal, and combine well with treachery: A tantalizing start to a magnificent vampire series.

BUT - OH – NO……….YES - SHE - DID!!! RAPHAEL doesn’t have your typical HEA, but the ending will have you scrambling to read the next book in the series, JABRIL.

Well now – that’s a hook-up! And I would expect no less from Ms. Kennedy and Decadent’s 1NS series. The cover alone lets the reader know they are in-store for hot deliciousness!

Both Wyatt and Rye, separately, contacted 1NS dating service months ago, hoping the agency would be able to connect them with a female of their dreams; if only for one night. What they don’t expect is their mutual attraction toward each other. Wyatt is hesitant to acknowledge his emotions because of his position as a U.S. Marshall. Whereas, Rye has no doubts about how he feels for the rough and rugged Wyatt. The initial seduction of Wyatt is volatile and what immediately follows between the two alphas is explosive.

Ms. Kennedy teases near the end with the same cryptic text message sent from Madame Eve, of 1NS, to both Rye and Wyatt. Which leads me to believe these two may get their match from 1NS yet. A girl can dream……

My Review:

This is the fourth in the Witches series. Mages, witches, demons, fiends, hot male bodies, oh yeah!

There is a nice Glossary before the story. I really love it when authors do this when they have created a new mythos or world. And being new to this series, it was especially helpful. I was a little concerned about not having read the first three books when I was asked to review this. Because of the way the story is written, had I not known this was a part of a series, I wouldn't have guessed. The book reads like a stand alone even though fans of the series will probably recognize a few of the things mentioned as being probably from an earlier story and I'm sure many of the secondary characters were introduced earlier as well.

Paisley is living her dream - she owns a bakery cafe - and suddenly finds herself very sick one day after receiving what she believed to be a static electricity charge when she and one of her hot customers accidentally touch.

Iskander, Paisley's landlord and "the most beautiful man [she's] ever seen", is a fiend - a subspecies of demon - who comes to the rescue when Paisley is dying from what he believes is an attempted demon possession. He thinks Paisley is "seriously, wickedly hot."

There is non stop action in this story and I read it in one day. I'd put it down only to find myself picking it back up shortly thereafter to see what happens next. This reminds me a little of a Kresley Cole Immortals After Dark story or maybe a Shayla Black Doomsday Brethren story as opposed to a straight witchcraft or magic story and that is a very good thing.

Seriously hot: sex up against a wall (she's just the right height), sex on a desk in a bakery (after almost getting kidnapped) and some hot tub sex (who needs water jets?). But in no way does the sex get in the way of, or slow down, the story.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can't wait to read the other books in the series.

My Review:

This is the first in Curran-Ross' The Swords Series. Jack the Ripper isn't the only monster on the streets of London in the 1890s. Sebastian, a very powerful and sadistic vampire is obsessed with "his" Juliet.

Nineteenth century London, vampires, demons, a villan, a womanizer, a virgin, an obsession and a love destined to be from birth. All the makings of a historical paranormal romance, right? Well... while set in 1893 London, this is not a historical period piece. It has a very dark and somewhat confusing beginning and finishes much like a Clive Barker or Stephen King horror story. It might be loosely considered a paranormal romance with a heavy dose of horror.

Curran-Ross has created a totally new vampire mythos with this series. Enter the world of the Taleians - vampires and vampire hybrids who have a weakness to iron and animal blood but whose females have the ability to heal human sickness and ailments. There are two clans of Taleians: Morrigan (royal/rulers) & Breanainn (elite royal warrior/protectors).

Juliet finds herself after many years of thinking she was human, changing. She is in realty a Talian Morrigan hybrid chosen at birth to be Queen of Taleians.

Nathan, a favorite of the ladies, never even considered that he may be anything other than human when he finds himself changing into a Talian Breanainn hybrid chosen at birth as Juliet's protector/counselor/mate, her Knight of Swords.

When Sebastian is able to trick Juliet into giving herself up to him, Nathan and Juliet are dropped into a world of horror. But is it the Taleians or the humans who are the monsters of this tale? Curran-Ross has quite a twist in store for readers in this tale. One I didn't see coming. But note there is no HEA ending here and the story ends without resolution which apparently continues into the next book in the series which should be out later this year. Paranormal romance fans may not be comfortable with this story while horror and urban fantasy fans should feel right at home.

Makes the world go round?

To my heroine, Esther in my new release The Beta book 3 of The Vanguards series, YES it does. She’s a monster slayer in a world where the monsters are starting to live openly in the public. New citizens…or in her opinion, more trouble.

Her job description as a slayer is not legal anymore, it would be like allowing assassins to kill at will. She now has to take her contracts through third party sources. Tired of living a secret life, she’s looking for the big score. The contract that will fill her bank account and she could retire on some tropical island…alone.

The prize she’s been looking for comes in a high paying contract for a Nosferatu Prime. Only a crazy person would go for someone from that strong vampire clan or someone desperate. She’s not sure if she’ll do it but she’s willing to take a look. Who knows maybe she’ll get lucky?

Character interview with Felicity Heaton character Lealandra

Interview with a sassy witch

Thank you to the lovely Laurie for inviting me to come here today and chat with everyone as part of my Paranormal Pandemonium 2011 Blog Tour for my eight book releases this year.

I guess that I should probably introduce myself so you all know who I am. I’m Felicity Heaton and I have written over forty paranormal romance and science fiction romance stories. I write as Felicity Heaton for the most part, but I also write my Vampires Realm series as F E Heaton. Most of the time I’m writing paranormal romances about vampires, werewolves, shape-shifters or dark angels, but sometimes I write about witches and demons too, and that’s where my new book comes in.

Ascension is the first book in my new Shadow & Light Trilogy series. It’s a passionate and action-packed urban fantasy romance featuring a powerful kick-ass witch heroine, Lealandra, and a snarky kick-ass dark half-demon hero, Taig.

Today, I have had a chance to interview Lealandra and catch up about her life and the series.

FH: I have Lealandra here with me today to talk about her book, Ascension. Firstly, can you tell us a little about yourself?

Lealandra: Sure thing. I’m a witch, and I come from a long line of witches. My family is old enough that we attract strong magic, the sort that has needs and desires. As long as we fulfil the needs of the magic that we host in our bodies, all is good. Since my magic found me, I’ve studied with it, learning to control it and to use the power it grants me. I’ve been with two covens in my time, one in the New York State countryside and one in New York City. They were both very different places and, looking back, I’m not sure that I made the right decision in moving to the city coven. Some people might think it’s crazy that I’m saying that I’m a witch, but it’s true. We keep out of the limelight as much as possible so normal people don’t find out about us, but sometimes it’s difficult, especially because of the war between demons and witches. We’re fighting over territory and I don’t think anyone knows why anymore. It’s a hatred that’s bred into us from generations past, and I’m a firm believer that it’s something that we now need to overcome so we don’t drag humans into our conflict.

FH: Can you tell us about what happened in your story?

Lealandra: I don’t like to think too much about it because it was a hard time for me. It was frightening enough discovering that I had started the ascension, let alone coming under attack from someone who wanted to kill me. The ascension is a time when the magic inside a witch grows to reach the pinnacle of the power it can achieve with a mortal body as its host. Most witches don’t go through the ascension. They’re rare, and it’s even rarer to survive one. My mother went through one and she almost killed me and my father when the final stage happened. My father was very brave and managed to save her. She hasn’t been the same since though. I was always afraid that I was going to end up the same way if I went through the ascension and survived. When someone killed Charlie, I didn’t know what to do. Charlie was my counter-balance. That’s a fancy term for someone who can take a little of my power, like siphoning it off, so it doesn’t get beyond my control. When he was shot, I thought it was over, I wasn’t going to survive. I had needed him to take part of my power during the final stage of the ascension or it would kill me. Then other things happened, and I fled my coven, and eventually I found the courage to seek help. It’s not easy walking back into the life of someone whose heart you broke, especially when that man is also an incredibly powerful half-demon and hunter with a bit of a temper. I was lucky that Taig was in a good mood night that and that he agreed to help me, even if his price was rather high.

FH: In Ascension, you meet Taig again after a period of six years apart. How was it seeing him again after all that time and was it frightening to walk back into his life after you had been the one to leave him?

Lealandra: I couldn’t breathe at first. Walking into that grim smoky bar and seeing him sitting there, nursing a drink, looking just as I remembered him in my dreams and in my heart, it was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. I can be stubborn as hell on a good day, and I’m not one to admit defeat, but I knew what needed to be done if I was going to survive my ascension and the madman who was after me. I needed someone who could not only find and defeat the person after me, but who could help me through my ascension and help me control my power. Taig could do that for me. When he noticed me, I almost bolted, but my feet wouldn’t move. I loved him so much all those years ago, and I still loved him. He’s the only man I’ve ever truly loved, even if he wanted to deny that feeling existed in me. I deserved his anger in payment for the pain I caused him. I walked in there knowing that, but I hadn’t expected him to kiss me back when those demons walked in and I panicked and kissed him to hide myself. When he kissed me, it was game over. I needed him all over again.

FH: Your relationship with Taig is complicated and forbidden to say the very least. Was it difficult at first when you started working together again? Taig can be quite stubborn and troublesome, so was it hard to crack his tough exterior and piece his heart back together?

Lealandra: Taig is impossible. One moment he’s the nicest guy in the world, open and loving, passionate and protective, and the next he’s hell-bent on making me pay for the hurt I caused him by leaving him to be with my counter-balance and the coven. Witches and demons don’t mix. Most people see a relationship between the two species as sacrilegious and disgusting, something worthy of punishment. When I fell for Taig, I wasn’t really thinking about what people say we should feel for each other because of what we are. I fell for a crazy, stubborn, gorgeous guy. I never realised just how much I missed him, and how much I hurt him, until we met again. Or how much he missed me. It was hard to move past what had happened between us, and even harder to make him believe in my feelings for him, but I’m not one to back down from a fight.

FH: How has life been since the events that happened and brought you together?

Lealandra: It’s been so peaceful. Taig took me to England and his family home, and I’ve learned so much about my magic. I’m growing more in touch with it and I’m learning a lot from some ancient witches that Taig knows. As for our relationship, we still have our ups and downs. Nothing is ever smooth sailing between us. We’re both so stubborn that we’ll fight tooth and nail to get our own way about some things, like hunting marks and the coven. Taig is dead set on me keeping away from covens from now on. He thinks I can learn all I need from the local witches, and in a way he’s right, but witches have a tendency to flock together. We have visitors quite often from my old covens and that gives me some company, and it’s enough for now. Taig is going through a lot at the moment and really needs me with him, and I don’t intend to leave him again. Not now, and not ever.

FH: Your story, Ascension, is a book in a series. In my interview with Taig, he mentioned that you’re the stars of the series and there there’ll be three books about you. What can you tell us about those books?

Lealandra: Well, I’m not sure how much I should say. Did he mention that they were going to be as action-packed as the first novel? *FH nods* Hmm, I guess I could say that I’m going to get my wish and we’re going to end up finding out what happened to Taig’s parents, and that it isn’t going to be an easy journey. The next story is as fraught with danger as the first, if not more so. It’s certainly going to be one hell of a read. Taig has only just started to understand the barest threads of his power, and I’m delving deeper into mine. There’s no telling where this is going to lead us.

FH: Describe yourself in one word?

Lealandra: Determined.

FH: That certainly suits you. Thank you for meeting with me today and chatting. Is there anything else that you’d like to add?

Lealandra: Only a brief thank you to you for interviewing me, and a tip-off to the readers that they really should check out my story, if only so they can fall in love with Taig just as I did.

If anyone has any questions they want to pose to Lealandra, or to myself as the author, I’d be happy to answer them if you leave a comment on this blog post.

Biography:
Felicity Heaton is a romance author writing as both Felicity Heaton and F E Heaton. She is passionate about penning paranormal tales full of vampires, witches, werewolves, angels and shape-shifters, and has been interested in all things preternatural and fantastical since she was just a child. Her other passion is science-fiction and she likes nothing more than to immerse herself in a whole new universe and the amazing species therein. She used to while away days at school and college dreaming of vampires, werewolves and witches, or being lost in space, and used to while away evenings watching movies about them or reading gothic horror stories, science-fiction and romances.

Having tried her hand at various romance genres, it was only natural for her to turn her focus back to the paranormal, fantasy and science-fiction worlds she enjoys so much. She loves to write seductive, sexy and strong vampires, werewolves, witches, angels and alien species. The worlds she often dreams up for them are vicious, dark and dangerous, reflecting aspects of the heroines and heroes, but her characters also love deeply, laugh, cry and feel every emotion as keenly as anyone does. She makes no excuses for the darkness surrounding them, especially the paranormal creatures, and says that this is their world. She’s just honoured to write down their adventures.

My first Laurel McKee book and I really enjoyed it. I loved the setting, the storyline was fantastic and so is the writing style of the author. I know I will be going back to read the first two books because I do believe I missed out on some things in the story. You get suspense, danger, secrets, and some smoking hot sex because these to go at it right of the bat. I believe the author done her homework research in writing this book it shows out nicely.

I recommend anyone to start at book one because like I said I felt like I was missing the connection between these two and I wanted to know what it was really bad. What I disliked most was it read like Grant went to this island to get away from Caroline, but when she arrives he just forgets he shouldn’t be with her and goes at it right off the bat and never stops, although he would mention at times that he needed to leave her. Caroline is quite clanging to Grant and she stays there with no fuss whatsoever. Let’s say it left me scratching my head at times in wonder why there wasn’t more tension between these two. I did like reading both characters Grant has a mystery about him and Caroline is tuff as nails and that’s what Grant likes the most.

My Review -

This is a short, sweet read about Tehran, a young woman who feels alone and unloved on the world and Sebastian, a vampire who in his 400 plus years of "living" has never known what it is to love a woman until now.

Tehran literally crashes in Sebastian one night as she tries to escape a mob of men who want to plunder her body. What occurs next for the two of them is an unknown force that draws them together despite the fact that they have just met. However, because of a sense of betrayal Tehran resists what her heart tells her and flees from Sebastian while he struggles to win her heart.

I truly enjoyed this book as I feel the deep passion that Sebastian felt for Tehran. There is one scene in particular where Sebastian is on his front porch and he willing endures the sun's rays to in order to follow Tehran. That scene broke my heart and made my heart ache for his pain. The way the author describes Sebastian (mouth-watering) and that scene will make the reader want to scream at Tehran and smack her for being such a fool.

While I would have preferred the sex scenes to be more descriptive, the author did a marvelous job creating some very passionate and hot scenes.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a paranormal romance story with a passionate, brooding vampire who knows how to make you melt with his undead love.

New blood book blogger on the block interview

This month I have with us  Madame D's Boudoir . So, please give her a warm welcome and check out her review blog. It may become your next favorite blog.

Tell us a little about yourself?

Hmm... I'm 27, married to the first man I ever went out with, we have a four year old son, and live in a small town called Derry in Northern Ireland. I LOVE to read, and have recently tried my hand at writing my own saucy tales. When not having my nose stuck in a book, or my mind in the gutter, I work in the local Psych ward - believe it or not I'm a psychiatric nurse, very responsible. I met my best friend on-line and love her very much - she's as crazy as I am. LOL. Isn't that right Sue? *wink*

How long have you been reading? What’s your favorite genre?

I didn't take an interest in reading until I was about 15. I got a free book, The Secret Vampire by L.J Smith, in one of my magazines and fell in love with the characters in it. But my obsession with reading didn't start until about three years ago when I discovered the amazing Felicity Heaton and fell in love with her Nicholas from Eternal Kiss. I love her Vampires Realm series and I'm totally head-over-heels about her Winter - or should I say MY Winter. LOL. So as you can guess I'm a fan of Paranormal Romance. I'm also a huge fan of Historical Romance, all those Warriors of Old, Highlander in particular. I mean, who can resist a sword wielding hunk in a skirt. I for one can not. Mmm... just thinking about muscly man-thighs makes me melt *cough* Sorry!! LOL.

When and why did you start doing book reviews?

I only started up my blog in November last year, and started reviewing books around the same time. A friend of mine introduced me to Goodreads that September, and as I reviewed my books and started to get positive feedback she encouraged me to start up the blog. And that was that. I started making friends with some amazing women and they gave me their books to read and review, and now I'm addicted. But it's all for fun.

How long have you been reviewing books?

Like I was saying, I only started in November time last year and I'm totally addicted now. LOL. Hopefully mes petits cheris enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy writing them. *wink*
Do you take notes for your reviews while you read?
Of course!! I have a head like a damn sieve. If I don’t take notes I'll forget all the important stuff that will lure my followers in and get them to read all these amazing books. LOL.

Why did you start a book blog?

A friend of mine had one and I thought it was pretty cool. She encouraged me start my own and introduced me to several of her author friends, ladies who I love and stalk relentlessly now. LOL. I didn't really want to do it at first, but once I got hooked on the reading and people took an interest in my reviews I thought why not. And like I said before, I'm addicted now.

How long does it usually take you to read and write a review for your blog?

Ohh... it all depends on the book I'm reading. Usually I'll have a book finished in a day, but at times if the book is a little slow it can take me two or three days to read it. I read a book a while back and it took me nearly a week to finish it. But regardless of how long it takes me to read it I always have the review posted the day after. Unless it's an ARC and the author asks me to wait closer to the release date to post it.

What’s the hardest thing you had to do in setting up your blog?

Hmm... It took me a while to get used to everything - organizing the layout, posting things properly, thinking of ways to gain followers and have people love me. LOL. Since then I have started doing a few bookish memes, getting involved in blog hops and tours, doing author interviews and giveaways ect... so things are easier for me now. All I have to do now is make people love me. *wink* LOL.

What’s the most exciting thing that has happened to you since your started your blog?

Being asked to do this interview. *blushes* I'm so used to seeing author interviews on other blogs that when you asked me to participate I felt all special. Aww... LOL. But I do get excited every time I asked an author I love or one of my Girl Crushes - they know who they are - to do an interview or giveaway and they agree without hesitation. It makes my day. I love it that they take time out participate, makes me love them all the more.

What’s your favorite thing to do on your blog?

Author interviews, I love chatting to all those amazing women. An more recently the hunky male models who we see on the covers of our favorite sexy books. I have an interview with one such hunk coming up this month, so stay tuned. *wink*

Any tips, for a new upcoming book blogger?

Just have fun!! Don't stress out trying to create the perfect blog, just give it time and it will take shape eventually. Great things weren't built in a day and all that. Just enjoy your books, write your reviews, and the rest will come in time. *wink*

What are the most books you read in a week?

I once read ten books within a week. They were all by the amazing Kallysten. My #1 Girl Crush - I love you Kally *wink* LOL. I read her On The Edge andDemons Age series when she was my 'Author of the Month.' Most of them were short reads, but I'm still proud of myself for devouring that many books in the one week.

My Review:

This is the third in the Shifter Evolutions paranormal futuristic sci-fi series. While each book can be read separately or in series order, the author suggests starting with this book because it has the most information about the shifter and hybrid race. The other books take place either in the past or the future. Blackwelder does a very good job of providing an overall glossary/encyclopedic overview of the shifter race before the story begins.

This is a heart-wrenching story about what happens when aliens land and start to interact with humans and of course the military gets involved. In typical "shoot first ask questions later" fashion the military have decimated the alien population. Unbeknownst to the military, the shifter males have impregnated human females for the past 20 years so there are now hybrid shifters. This is the story of a small band of remaining shifters in Alaska 20 years after arriving on Earth. It is also a story about one such human female who is impregnated and her attempts to keep the knowledge from the military while learning all she can about the new species.

Melissa, the human female lead, is a military research scientist. Unlike her research assistant, she is military minded and wants to see the shifter race wiped out but she can't help being awed by their genetic makeup. She is definitely an "experiments first, humanity second" kind of gal but she's not totally conscienceless. And she can't help being drawn to Brendan.

Brendan, the shifter male lead, just wants to survive and see his babies born and safe as do the others of his race. He finds himself drawn to and loving Melissa.

Keenan and Diamond - a forbidden romance that might just get Diamond's family killed.

Upon finishing the story you have no qualms about labeling the humans the bad guys in this. As usual, fear of the unknown makes idiots and monsters of mankind.

Not having read books one and two of the series, I wasn't lost but did have some questions that I wonder if were answered there. The writing style is a bit unusual but I was quickly drawn in and broke out in tears a couple of times, which shows that the characters are so believable as to incite sympathy and caring. Once I started reading this I couldn't put it down. This is not what paranormal romance or urban fantasy fans are used to but I think they could enjoy the book.
