When the god of wine and ecstasy, Dionysus, callously dumps his latest conquest, the mortal Ariadne, the goddess Hera has had enough. She robs Dionysus of his memory to teach him a lesson in humility.
Ariadne is deeply hurt after Dionysus dismisses their night of passion as “just sex” and doesn’t want to see her anymore. When she finds him bloodied and beaten and suffering from amnesia, she quickly forms a plan to get back at him. As she pretends to be his fiancĂ©e, Ariadne makes Dionysus believe he loves her. But the longer the charade continues, the more difficult it becomes to really see who teaches whom a lesson.
And what if Dionysus gains his memory back? Will there be hell to pay for her deception, or can a mortal woman truly win a god’s love?

My Review -
A Scent of Greek is the 2nd book in the Out of Olympus series by Tina Folsom and once again Tina takes readers on a wonderful journey with sexy gods and their trials and tribulations with love.
This book was pure fun from beginning to end that had me going through a rollercoaster of emotions from laughing out loud many times (I received many stares from other commuters on the train ride to and from work), grabbing a tissue during the heartaches and trying to cool myself down during the hot, passionate scenes.
Dio being the God of wine and ecstasy has lived his long life going through a different woman every night and has never felt anything for the multitude of women he has been with until Ariadne. For the first time Dio has spent two weeks pursuing and charming the same woman all in the name of conquest as he tries to convince himself amidst the strong and foreign feelings he is developing for Ariadne. After a night of passion that burned into his soul like never before Dio walks away from Ariadne not because he wants to but feels he needs to. What results is the devastation of Ariadne heart and her resolution to teach Dio a lesson.
Ariadne is a bright, intelligent, successful and beautiful young woman who seems to have it all except for love. She believes love is not part of her destiny since she was literally left at the altar, broken-hearted, embarrassed and cheated out of her money by her fiance. With Dio being such a delicious temptation could she finally let her guard down and allow herself to trust another from breaking her heart?
After a night of intense passion Dio leaves Ariadne fearful of the strange feelings lurking deep within him and breaks her heart, but Ariadne confronts him and Dio acts cold and callous to drive her away. What Dio is unaware is a meddling goddess is set on teaching him a lesson which results in a series of events that Tina so vividly describes that the reader feel that they are right on the front lines of the action.
I absolutely love not only how Tina writes some of the best sex scenes out there, but her sense of humor. The things that she makes Dio go through and endure made me smile and laugh throughout the book. I highly recommend this book to not only paranormal romance lovers, but to all the women out there who ever had their hearts torn in two due to the actions of some heartless guy. Sometimes revenge can be so sweet and Tina knows how to dish it out for our enjoyment. So what are you wanting for? Go get this book!

Is it Paranormal Romance of Urban Fantasy? Author Stacey Kennedy's view
Please welcome Stacey Kennedy
Urban Fantasy Romance—Paranormal Romance, which is it??
Gawd, where do I even start? I’m sure many of you have wondered what the difference between these genres is. Let me tell you it is not an easy answer.
Wikipedia defines Urban Fantasy as “A sub-genre of fantasy defined by place; the fantastic narrative has an urban setting. Many urban fantasies are set in contemporary times and contain supernatural elements. However, the stories can take place in historical, modern, or futuristic periods. The prerequisite is that they must be primarily set in a city.”
Wikipedia defines Paranormal Romance as “A sub-genre of the romance novel. A type of speculative fiction, paranormal romance focuses on romance and includes elements beyond the range of scientific explanation, blending together themes from the genres of traditional fantasy, science fiction, or horror.”
So for the most part this explains the differences between the genres, or does it? The line between these genres has become somewhat blurred and whomever you ask will say something different. Trust me, when I started asking this question, I got lots of different answers.
Some will tell you it has nothing to do with the setting, the romance, or any other element, and is defined by the characters in the book. If the series uses the same hero/heroine throughout then it’s Urban Fantasy Romance. If the series has a new hero/heroine in each book then it’s Paranormal Romance.
But wait…
Keri Arthur (love her by the way) says this on her website about the two genres, “Paranormal romance is a romance first and foremost. In urban fantasy the romance is generally a secondary plot (if it exists at all)”
Geesh! No wonder it’s so confusing! So, where do I stand on the matter?
Personally, I think it’s all of the above.
Urban Fantasy Romance is a novel that is set in an urban setting and has supernatural elements. There will be a romance but the romance is not the only focus in the story—a side plot, yes, but the story isn’t moved along by the romantic element only. Each book will contain the same hero and heroine throughout the series.
Paranormal Romance is a romance that has supernatural elements. The characters are driven by the romance, and even though there might be an adventure, the main plot is about the hero and heroine’s love story. Each book that is contained in the series will have a different hero and heroine.
I’ve written both, Urban Fantasy Romance (The Magical Sword series), and Paranormal Romance (The Watchers series)—both are fun to write, but it’s the balance of how much romance you put into the story, what the goals of the characters are, what their conflict is, and what is the main plot of the story that defines where it belongs.
I hope I’ve given you some insight into these genres as I know it can be uber confusing! And if you are still scratching your head, then just decide for yourself and carry on! Really, as long as it’s a good story, it won’t matter which genre it falls into!

Is it paranormal romance or urban fantasy? With author Gabrielle Bisset
Paranormal Romance or Urban Fantasy?
Cousins from the same side of the family, in the world of romance novels, paranormal romance and urban fantasy are often confused. Readers who love paranormal romance are often frustrated when they buy a book clearly marketed as their favorite genre and then come to realize that, in fact, what they purchased is urban fantasy. So how can a reader tell the difference?
This is just my personal assessment, but here are the major areas the two sub-genres of romance part ways. First, the romance is always paramount in paranormal romance. True, it’s romance between species sometimes, but the romance is key, even if it takes place in an urban setting. This is not the case in urban fantasy. While there certainly may be romance in urban fantasy, it just isn’t the central idea. This is not to say there won’t be some very hot scenes in urban fantasy, just as in paranormal romance. The important point here is that it’s never the focus.
Next, there’s the action. This may be why urban fantasy books are marketed incorrectly. Paranormal romance often has a good bit of action to it, including fight scenes and chases. Often, the sexy hero is forced to defend his heroine against some unknown evil, such as his enemies. Romance readers love this. In urban fantasy, however, the action is one of the most important areas of the story. Often there’s a war between two groups, who may be of different races or species. So romance takes a back seat to the action in this sub-genre.
Another very big difference is that paranormal romance is usually a one book deal, whereas urban fantasy stories are often multi-book issues. This becomes problematic, however, when you see a series like the Black Dagger Brotherhood books. Technically, the yummy brothers J.R. Ward has created reside in paranormal romance land, but if you take a look at the series, the lines between paranormal romance and urban fantasy begin to get blurred. In fact, after Zsadist’s story, I would argue Ward took a very sharp turn into urban fantasy. I admit she steps back sometimes, especially in her most recent, Lover Unleashed, which was very much paranormal romance, but she walks a fine line.
And then there’s the world building. Paranormal romances may have some aspects of world building, but it isn’t that important. In urban fantasy, it’s key. Just as with its literary relative, fantasy, urban fantasy involves world building as an integral part of the storyline, along with the urban focus.
However, the most important difference between these two sub-genres is that paranormal romance must have a HEA. Without a happy ending, it can’t be romance. That’s what the romance gods have dictated, and this is a hard and fast rule. Urban fantasy, however, doesn’t require a HEA because the romance isn’t the focal point.
Hopefully, publishers and marketers can begin to determine what the consensus is about these two sub-genres. Until then, a little variety can’t hurt, but paranormal romance fans love their romance. I just wonder how urban fantasy readers feel when they pick up a book and realize they aren’t getting world building and battles between good and evil.

Is it Paranormal Romance of Urban Fantasy? With Tina Folsom
By Tina Folsom
When Laurie asked me to do a guest blog about the differences between Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance, I immediately said yes and started panicking. Because, frankly, I had no idea what Urban Fantasy really was. So I figured I’d analyze the issue and start with what I knew: Paranormal Romance.
Not only do I write Paranormal Romance (PNR for short), I also read a vast number of PNR novels. I did a little digging to figure out what my novels have in common with those of other PNR authors. It quickly became clear that there were a few components each PNR has to have:
1. A hero and a heroine who fall in love
2. A happy end
3. A conclusion / solution to the main conflict of the story (which in a PNR is generally how the two lovers will get together and stay together)
4. The focus in the story has to be on the romance, not the external conflict that threatens their world.
Well, #1 is pretty easy, and just to be politically correct here, in a gay PNR there would of course be two heroes. But couldn’t an Urban Fantasy (UF) also have a couple who fell in love? Absolutely. That’s why it’s so hard to keep the two genres apart.
For example, in HP Mallory’s “To Kill a Warlock” the main character, Dulcie, falls in love with Knight—over several books in the series. And I believe that is one of the important points that distinguish a UF from a PNR: the hero and the heroine’s relationship doesn’t culminate in a happy end at the end of book 1 or even book 2. Their relationship is continuing throughout the series and is in no way the focus of the story.
Which brings me to another difference between the two: #4 above—in a PNR the romance is the be all and end all, in a UF it is more likely a mystery to be solved, a threat to be defeated, or a world to be saved. While parts of these danger elements are certainly common in PNR, they don’t overshadow the romance.
But aren’t there PNR series that go on for six or eight or even twelve books? Of course, but if you read Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breed series, or Kerrelyn Sparks’ Love at Stake series, you’ll notice that each book has a new set of hero and heroine. The supporting cast remains essentially the same. That’s one of the fundamental differences: with each book in a PNR series you get a new love story and the promise of a happy end. And that’s what a romance reader expects.
A UF might also have more of a feel of a suspense than a romance. However, it’s hard to have a clear dividing line. When I read Gail Carriger’s “Soulless”, the book had the feel of a PNR to me, however, considering this is a series of four books with the same hero and heroine (who are married as of book 2 and whose central conflict centers more around suspense and mystery rather than their own relationship), I’m revising my opinion and would personally call it an Urban Fantasy.
You’ll be the judge.

My Review:
What a great story line! It reminds me a little bit of Anne Rice's Queen of the Damned with the first vampire making herself known to her "children" because she is unhappy with what some have done and must be punished (read: killed) while one stands out as an obsession with plans to keep that vampire as a 'pet' forever. As similar as the plots are, the stories are very different.
While this is not really a paranormal romance, it is a paranormal love story, actually a few love stories. The difference? The couples are already together when the story begin and their love is tested throughout all the drama. It is also the story of a young romance which is torn apart and turned into something very ugly by revenge, hatred and perceived betrayal.
There is a very brutal beating scene when Rachael does something to anger the 4000+ year old Harshika. Good thing she's a vampire or she would have never survived the first 5 minutes.
There are a few very violent forced sexual scenes but they are not too graphic in detail however the author is still able to successfully portray the emotional horror of the scenes. There is also a quick and light m/m scene.
This is the third in the Dark Kiss Trilogy but if you haven't read the rest of the series, you won't be lost. There are past events that are mentioned or explained as necessary but that just made me want to read the first two, not need to in order to understand what was going on here.
I enjoyed this story and I think fans of vampire, urban fantasy and even paranormal romance genres will like this.
Warning Spoiler Alert!!!
For paranormal romance fans, there is a HEA ending for several of the couples.

My Review:
4.5 Stars! What a good debut novel by Marrow! A plane crash, an amnesiac, a reporter, a murder, a romance and a mysterious talent take center stage in this paranormal romance with a mainstream novel slant featuring a creative new mythos for the sexy female lead character.
The media named her "Angel of the Hudson" when she survived a plane crash and saved a baby — the only other survivor. Unfortunately, while she can recall the details of the crash, she has no memory of who she is, why she was on the plane or where she was going. She notices she is having strange reactions to people. She quickly begins to think she is going crazy.
Dante, a television reporter, is filming nearby on a ferry when the plane goes in the river. He is the first to spot the survivor and jumps in to rescue her. His brother happens to be a security guard at the hospital where she's taken and is able to slip her his card and visit her a time or two.
When she recovers from the minor injuries but still can't remember anything about herself other than what the airline tells her came up in their investigation, she is transferred to a "behavior center" a.k.a. psyche ward. There she discovers more about her strange ability and checks herself out. She finds Dante's card and calls him for help.
When she tells Dante of her ability, he isn't sure he believes her since the ability doesn't seem to work on/around him but finds himself agreeing to help her. However, when he witnesses for himself another strange aspect of her ability manifest, he can no longer deny it.
There are several subplots to make the story even more interesting. I think fans of mainstream thriller, paranormal romance and the supernatural genres will enjoy this.

Review The Botticelli Affair by Traci L. Slatton
Title: The Botticelli Affair
Author: Traci L. Slatton

Genre: Paranormal Romance
Format: eBook, 180 pgs
Release Date: July 12, 2011

Luscious art forger Laila Cambridge has a little vampire problem…. She’s a high-spirited woman with a sordid past, trying to go straight. Enter gorgeous John Bolingbroke, a half-vampire with news of her missing father. From New York through Paris, Amsterdam, and Rome, while fleeing ruthless vampires, Laila searches desperately for her father and a lost painting that holds a coveted secret.

My Review:
Vampires, a missing Botticelli painting, the Illuminati, the Egyptian Book of the Dead and a simmering sexual attraction come in to play in this paranormal romance filled with humor, non-stop action, travel to several countries and many, many lies. I laughed and I cried while reading this good plot.
John Bolingbroke is a 500+ year old changed vampire. "Fifty years ago, a whimsical god granted him half a soul and bestowed upon him unruly, inescapable powers." He overhears a plot by an old, powerful vampire coven to kidnap Laila as incentive for her father to do what they wish. John has promised her father he'd protect her. "But meeting her, now that she was a grown woman, that changed everything. It was no longer about impersonal appreciation. He wanted her like no woman he’d met before. He was honor-bound to protect her. But who would protect Laila from him?"
Laila, a doctoral art student and 29 year old former master forger, misses painting but it is like an addiction for her and she needs to stay away from it. She describes herself as "a six foot-tall red-headed babe who can conquer anything with her ten languages! I have a tattoo on the small of my back that says 'Rock You'!" Her father has been missing for 5 yrs. She must delve back into her unsavory past to help save her father and, unbeknownst to her, herself.
The story is a little high brow with all the art discussions and literary references. It was filled with "big words" I needed a dictionary for as well as Italian, French and German phrases for which I required the Google translator.
If you like a lot of mystery with your paranormal romance, you'll be right at home with this book.
Warning Spoiler Alert!!!
While the story is resolved and the main characters get to stay together, I'm not sure I will say this has a HEA ending.

FALLEN is the powerful story of love at the end of times. Emma is a woman struggling to survive and keep seven children alive in a world ravaged by chaos, madness, and war.

My Review:
This is a paranormal romance without any supernatural elements. I laughed a little, which may sound somewhat strange for a end of the world disaster story, and I cried several times. While it is a romance, it has a heart wrenching and depressing tone throughout and is not what typical paranormal romance fans are used to.
Almost everyone is dead, killed by a deadly 'pearlescent' mist which came up from the ground and then out of the oceans to kill by turning internal organs to mush, heating it up and exploding into steam, water and fine powder. Of the people who are left, many are insane and many develop physic gifts.
Emma's husband and one of her little girls are hopefully safe from the mist in Canada. She and her daughter Mandy were visiting family in France in the Before. She prostitutes herself to Arthur, leader of a large group of men, to have a place of safety, shelter and food for her and the 8 kids she has picked up along the way.
Both Emma and Arthur have secrets and it seems as if they are going to be able to overcome them with love.
There is a tribute to the Aliens movie starring Sigourney Weaver in Emma naming one of the kids Newt. If you liked the short lived TV program Jericho staring Gerald McRaney and Skeet Ulrich, you'll like this. If you liked I am Legend with Will Smith, you'll like this.
This has a good story line with somewhat interesting characters. If you like "the world as we know it has ended and now what do we do to survive" stories, you'll like this one.
Warning Spoiler Alert!!!

Please welcome author Felicity Heaton!!
The angels of the Her Angel romance series
Thank you Laurie for having me here again as part of my Paranormal Pandemonium 2011 Blog Tour, and in particular the Her Angel series section of it that celebrates the entire angel romance series and the release of the fourth book, Her Guardian Angel.
Before I go any further and start talking about the angels at the centre of my Her Angel series, I thought I would introduce myself. I write various paranormal romances as Felicity Heaton and my Vampires Realm series as F E Heaton. My paranormal romances are usually focused on vampires and werewolves, but I do also write demons and witches, and of course there’s my series about angels too. I’ve been writing original fiction since 2005, and have been an indie author since 2006, and in that time I have written and released over forty stories.
I’m here today to talk about my angels. When I set out to write the series, I knew that I wanted to write about angels who were still working for a higher power, and that most of them would reside in Heaven, and some of them have turned and joined Hell. I didn’t want to write your typical fallen angel stories. I wanted that added complication of them being still in active service. I feel it adds to a story and gives it a unique twist that other angel romances lack, and also gives it a dash of the forbidden, which I love to write in a story.
Because my angels are still working for the man, I had to think a lot about how they would work and what Heaven would be like. I considered that there would be angels who did different duties and eventually formed several divisions of angel, and decided that each of those divisions would be identified by their appearance. All angels wear armour under normal circumstances. They have a short breastplate and back plate covering their upper torso, and vambraces that cover from their wrist to elbow, as well as greaves that protect their shins and also their boots. Around their hips they wear a loincloth and an armoured skirt type affair, a little like Roman soldiers. The armour of each division is a different colour, as are their wings.
In the Her Angel series, there are four main divisions of angel. The angels of death all wear black armour with gold edging and detailing, and have beautiful black wings. The angels responsible for intervention and mediating, sort of like what we think of as a regular angel, all have white armour with gold detailing, and white wings, and often use white and gold spears as their weapons of choice. The hunter angels, those responsible for tracking demons and killing them, have tawny wings and brown armour with dull gold detailing, and prefer swords. And finally, the guardian angels have blue armour with silver detailing, and silver-blue wings, and often use spears to fight with too.
Each division has different responsibilities, although all of them are obvious from their division titles, with the exception of the guardians. They do more than just guard. The guardians are split into subdivisions of those who watch over mortals, those who guard Heaven against intruders and act as wardens in the containment facility where demons are kept for questioning, and those who escort mortal souls through Heaven or to Hell on death. Marcus in Her Guardian Angel was the sort of guardian who did many duties, including helping out the other divisions when they were short on staff, and shepherding souls, and then ended up watching over mortals when he lost his wings to a curse, which is how he ends up being Amelia’s guardian angel.
The angels all have different abilities too, although they all share certain common skills such as being able to cast a glamour on themselves to hide their wings and change their appearance to mortal eyes so we don’t see them as angels, and making themselves invisible to mortal eyes during flight, or materialising their weapons and armour from thin air, or making objects appear or disappear in the same fashion. They are all very powerful and otherworldly beings, although some are far more powerful than others, and that all depends on how old the angel in question is.
Age doesn’t necessarily mean the same thing to them as it does to us though. Age to an angel is about the time of their creation, not about when they were last reborn. There are the original angels, and those are the most powerful, and then the other leagues of angels who were created over the centuries after them. Angels can die but they’re reincarnated back into Heaven in their usual physical appearance, always looking the same age and same hair colour, eye colour, etc as before. The only thing that can change about them is their division. Sometimes angels are born into a different division, so they have different wing colour and a different role from before. This isn’t normally a problem because an angel forgets everything about their past life upon rebirth, and learns everything from scratch again, essentially living a whole new life. There are some exceptions though. Apollyon, from my story Her Dark Angel and who also appears and plays a major role in Her Fallen Angel and Her Guardian Angel too, is one of the oldest angels in existence and is forever reborn into the role of angel of death.
The angels in my Her Angel series are very complex and live in an equally complex world. They’re eternal, always reborn on death, and are extremely powerful, although each has a different fighting style and they can all have a special power on top of their normal ones, such as healing, and they live in a society split into divisions and are loyal to their duties and their master. But they’re also men, and are passionate about the women they fall in love with, fiercely protective and possessive, and will do anything to ensure the safety of their woman, even if it means turning their back on their duty forever.

Biography:
Felicity Heaton is a romance author writing as both Felicity Heaton and F E Heaton. She is passionate about penning paranormal tales full of vampires, witches, werewolves, angels and shape-shifters, and has been interested in all things preternatural and fantastical since she was just a child. Her other passion is science-fiction and she likes nothing more than to immerse herself in a whole new universe and the amazing species therein. She used to while away days at school and college dreaming of vampires, werewolves and witches, or being lost in space, and used to while away evenings watching movies about them or reading gothic horror stories, science-fiction and romances.
Having tried her hand at various romance genres, it was only natural for her to turn her focus back to the paranormal, fantasy and science-fiction worlds she enjoys so much. She loves to write seductive, sexy and strong vampires, werewolves, witches, angels and alien species. The worlds she often dreams up for them are vicious, dark and dangerous, reflecting aspects of the heroines and heroes, but her characters also love deeply, laugh, cry and feel every emotion as keenly as anyone does. She makes no excuses for the darkness surrounding them, especially the paranormal creatures, and says that this is their world. She’s just honoured to write down their adventures.

It wasn’t until recently when I was writing the first book in A Magical Dressmaking mystery series that I began to think of my muse, or muses as the case may be, as something really tangible that I could summon at will, or that would betray me by being absent when I needed her/them most. In fact, I can’t say that I thought about my muses --because as I’m writing this, I’ve had an epiphany and do believe that I have more than one-- much at all.
But they’ve shown their true colors. I’d begun to think of them as fickle girls, but I’ve changed my tune. I’ll never look at them in quite the same way or take for granted the beauty of having them on the job, fully engaged in my creative process, or the power of their insight.
I have new respect for my muses and what they offer through song, practice, and memory.
It often takes a big shake up and the absence of something to really appreciate what you have. That’s how it happened for me. You know what they say about absence making the heart grow fonder and all that? It worked. They left, I was melancholy, and they returned with a new light for me to follow.
How very poetic, I know.
I’m not a metaphysical girl. My feet are firmly planted on the ground. Let me be clear, I don’t, like, sit around thinking about cliches and how they apply to my life. But cliches are cliches because there is truth in them and sometimes that truth is more palatable when taken in a pithy dose. The absence of my muses is what helped me recognize them in the first place. It also helped me appreciate the creative energy they bring into the my writing equation.
They deserted me several times while I was writing Pleating for Mercy, but it was through that desertion that I came to appreciate what they are to me and what they do. I can pinpoint exactly when they left, almost down to the very minute. My creativity had dried up. I had writer’s block. I was panicking, thinking I’d never finish this book, and if I did, it would suck.
But I can also look back and see when them returning--after I’d taken much needed time away from my project, had recharged, and had allowed my mind to open up, let fresh idea in, and see things in a new way.
What I realized was that those clever girls didn’t abandon me,. I’d temporarily shut them out. I was on overload and completely unable to feel their creative energy flow into me. And so they stepped aside and led me away from my writing and back into reality where I could and did regain perspective on my characters and plot by doing the opposite of what I always think I should do. I always think I should keep going, push through the writing pain, persevere and give myself permission to write crap and revise later (which I do whether I give myself permission or not). I never think that stopping and taking precious time away from my writing is the answer.
But it is! I’ve completely changed my thought process on this idea and it’s been so freeing. If only I’d listened to the girls in my head sooner I might have staved off some gray hairs and wrinkles and the divot in my forehead from banging it against the wall.
Better late than never, right?
So my muses, yet to be named (though Lola and Harlow come to mind), are alive and well, ever-present, and an important part of my creativity. Thank God I realized it!
How about you? Have you ever felt that your muse(s) has abandoned you? Did you have an epiphany like I did?
Here's a taste of Pleating for Mercy, the brand new book in A Magical Dressmaking Mystery series. The release date is August 2nd!
Excerpt:
Chapter 1
Rumors about the Cassidy women and their magic swirled through Bliss, Texas like a gathering tornado. For 150 years, the family had managed to dodge most of the rumors, brushing off the idea that magic infused their handwork, and chalking up any unusual goings-on to coincidence.
But we all knew that the magic started the very day Butch Cassidy, my great-great-great grandfather, had turned his back to an ancient Argentinean fountain, dropped a gold coin into it, and made a wish. The Cassidy family legend says he asked for his firstborn child, and all who came after, to live a charmed life, the threads of good fortune, talent, and history flowing like magic from their fingertips.
That magic spilled from the Cassidy women’s hands into handmade tapestries and homespun wool, crewel embroidery and perfectly pieced and stitched quilts. And into my dressmaking. It connected us to our history, and to one another.
Butch hadn’t wanted his family to be outcasts as he and Cressida had been, and so his Argentinean wish also gifted his descendants with their own special charms. Whatever Meemaw, my great-grandmother, wanted, she got. My Grandmother, Nana, was a goat-whisperer. Mama’s green thumb could make anything grow.
None of understood how these charms were supposed to endear us to our neighbors. No matter how hard we tried to keep our magic on the down-low--so we wouldn’t wind up in our own contemporary Texas version of the Salem Witch Trials--people saw. And they talked.
The townsfolk came to Mama when their crops wouldn’t grow. They came to Nana when their goats wouldn’t mind. And they came to Meemaw when they wanted something so badly, they couldn’t see straight. I was seventeen when I finally realized that what Butch had really given the women in my family was a thread that connected them with others.
But Butch’s wish had apparently exhausted itself before I was born. I had no special charm, and I’d always felt as if a part of me was missing because of it.
Being back home in Bliss made the feeling stronger.
Meemaw had been gone five months now, but the old red farmhouse just off the square at 2112 Mockingbird Lane looked the same as it had when I was a girl. The steep pitch of the roof, the shuttered windows, the old pecan tree shading the left side of the house--it all sent me reeling back to my childhood and all the time I’d spent here with her.
I’d been back for five weeks and had worked nonstop, converting the downstairs of the house into my own designer dressmaking shop, calling it Buttons & Bows in honor of my great-great grandmother, Loretta Mae, but Bliss was not the same without her. Maybe that’s the part of me that was really missing.
What had been Loretta Mae’s dining room was now my cutting and work space. My five year old state of the art digital Pfaff sewing machine and Meemaw’s old Singer sat side by side on their respective sewing tables. An 8 foot long white-topped cutting table was in the center of the room, unused as of yet. Meemaw had one old dress form which I’d dragged down from the attic. I’d splurged and bought two more, anticipating a brisk dressmaking business which had yet to materialize.
I’d taken to talking to her during the dull spots in my days. “Meemaw,” I said now, sitting in my workroom, hemming a pair of pants, “it’s lonesome without you. I sure wish you were here.”
A breeze suddenly blew in through the screen, fluttering the butter yellow sheers that hung on either side of the window as if Meemaw could hear me from the spirit world. It was no secret that she’d wanted me back in Bliss. Was it so farfetched to think she’d be hanging around now that she’d finally gotten what she’d wanted?
I adjusted my square-framed glasses before pulling a needle through the pant leg. Gripping the thick synthetic fabric sent a shiver through me akin to fingernails scraping down a chalkboard. Bliss was not a mecca of fashion; so far I’d been asked to hem polyester pants, shorten the sleeves of polyester jackets, and repair countless other polyester garments. No one had hired me to design matching mother and daughter couture frocks, create a slinky dress for a night out on the town in Dallas, or anything else remotely challenging or interesting.
I kept the faith, though. Meemaw wouldn’t have brought me back home just to watch me fail.
As I finished the last stitch and tied off the thread, a flash of something outside caught my eye. I looked past the french doors that separated my work space from what had been Meemaw’s gathering room and was now the boutique portion of Buttons & Bows. The window gave a clear view of the front yard, the wisteria climbing up the sturdy trellis archway, and the street beyond. Just as I was about to dismiss it as my imagination, the bells I’d attached to a ribbon and hung from the knob danced in a jingling frenzy and the front door flung open. I jumped, startled, dropping the slacks, but clutching the needle.
A woman sidled into the boutique. Her dark hair was pulled up in the back into a messy, but trendy, bun and I noticed that her eyes were red and tired looking despite the heavy makeup she wore. She had on jean shorts, a snap front top that she’d gathered and tied in a knot below her breastbone, and wedge-heeled shoes. With her thumbs crooked in her back pockets and the way she jiggled one foot back and forth, she reminded me of Daisy Duke--with a muffin top.
Except for the Gucci bag slung over her shoulder. That purse was the real deal and had cost more than two thousand dollars, or I wasn’t Harlow Jane Cassidy.
A deep frown tugged at the corners of her shimmering pink lips as she scanned the room. “Huh, this isn’t at all what I pictured.”
Not knowing what she’d pictured, I said, “Can I help you?”
“Just browsing,” she said with a dismissive wave. She sauntered over to the opposite side of the room where a matching olive green and gold paisley damask sofa and love seat snuggled in one corner. They’d been the nicest pieces of furniture Loretta Mae had owned and some of the few I’d kept. I’d added a plush red velvet settee and a coffee table to the grouping. It was the consultation area of the boutique--though I’d yet to use it.
The woman bypassed the sitting area and went straight for the one-of-a-kind Harlow Cassidy creations that hung on a portable garment rack. She gave a low whistle as she ran her hand from one side to the other, fanning the sleeves of the pieces. “Did you make all of these?”
“I sure did,” I said, preening just a tad. Buttons & Bows was a custom boutique, but I had a handful of items leftover from my time in L.A. and New York to display and I’d scrambled to create samples to showcase.
She turned, peering over her shoulder and giving me a once over. “You don’t look like a fashion designer.”
I pushed my glasses onto the top of my head so I could peer at her, which served to hold my curls away from my face. Well, she didn’t look like she could afford a real Gucci, I thought, but I didn’t say it. Meemaw had always taught me not to judge a book by its cover. If this woman dragged around an expensive designer purse in little ol’ Bliss, she very well might need a fancy gown for something, and be able to pay for it.
I balled my fists, jerking when I accidentally pricked my palm with the needle I still held. My smile tightened--from her attitude as well as from the lingering sting on my hand--as I caught a quick glimpse of myself in the freestanding oval mirror next to the garment rack. I looked comfortable and stylish, not an easy accomplishment. Designer jeans. White blouse and color-blocked black and white jacket--made by me. Two inch heeled sandals which probably cost more than this woman’s entire wardrobe. Not that I’d had to pay for them, mind you. Even a bottom-of-the-ladder fashion designer with Maximilian got to shop at the company’s end-of-season sales, which meant fabulous clothes and accessories at a steal, a perk I was going to sorely miss.
I kept my voice pleasant despite the bristling I felt creep up inside me. “Sorry to disappoint. What does a fashion designer look like?”
She shrugged, a new strand of hair falling from the clip at the back of her head and framing her face. “Guess I thought you’d look all done up, ya know? Or be a gay man,” she tittered.
Huh. She had a point about the gay man thing. “Are you looking for anything in particular? Buttons & Bows is a custom boutique. I design garments specifically for the customer. Other than those items,” I said, gesturing to the dresses she was flipping through, “it’s not an off-the-rack shop.”
Before she could respond, the bells on the front door jingled again and the door banged open, hitting the wall. I made a mental note to get a spring or doorstop. There were a million things to fix around the old farmhouse. The list was already as long as my arm.
A woman stood in the doorway, the bright light from outside sneaking in around her, creating her silhouette. “Harlow Cassidy,” she cried out. “I didn’t believe it could really be true, but it is! Oh, thank God! I need your help!”

My Review:
Angels, demons, pawns, an eternal game between Heaven and Hell and a reluctant romance are featured in this fourth book in Heaton's Her Angel Series. It has a great plot and steamy chemistry between the main characters.
Marcus, Amelia's guardian angel, is shocked when she touches his hand — heat races up his arm and his heart starts to race. She looks into his eyes and his pain is instantly melted. He is astounded by his reaction to her now that he is on the mortal plane. This is his first mission to physically guard a human and he had been warned about women, how dangerous they can be. He doesn't want to be attracted to her, he just wants this mission to be over so he can return to Heaven.
Amelia thinks Marcus is smexy ... smart and sexy. She is so drawn to him but keeps getting mixed signals from him.
When they make love in the quasi-dream world, it is all she thought it might be. Later in realty, she can't believe it, it is actually much better. So much passion from her once cold angel.
Amelia is taken away from Marcus and he is more than furious. He takes his wrath out on the city in the form of a nasty thunderstorm before his friends are able to calm him and they take a trip to Hell to see what the demons know about the abduction and Amelia's possible future.
Heaven isn't all good and Hell isn't all bad in their game. The lengths each will go to with their pawns is surprising.
This is a stand alone book in the series, feel free to read out of order. I enjoyed this story very much with its creative story line. Fans of the paranormal romance and angel genres should enjoy it as well.
