My Review:

Jaguar sifters, wolf shifters, mutants (halflings), a partially covered ancient dig site, a Bloodstone and a forbidden romance are featured in this sexy paranormal romance. This is the second in the Lost City Shifters series but it is a stand alone story so don't worry about not having read the first book in the series yet.

Adriano is "Yaguara, ... a secluded tribe of jaguar shape-shifters living in the Amazon jungle." Even after five years in exile, "he’d never lusted after a human, period." Never been with one. But Sophie has him lusting after her. He knows she's aroused by him but she pushes everyone away. "Taking a human mate was taboo" under the former king. But there is a new king now and Adriano is still in exile.

Sophie is a struggling grad student on a dig deep in Peru where she hopes she will find answers to questions she has for her thesis. She is very attracted to Adriano but her thesis is too important and besides, gorgeous Adriano could have any one he wanted. After they have sex, which was very good - "I came twice, screaming like a banshee" she feels let down. She knows he held himself back.

Stone writes a very steamy sex scene. When Adriano first 'takes' Sophie they are on a ledge on a cliff - very hot. Then there is the tent scene, the hot springs scene and the cave scene and out by the ruins...

I enjoyed this story very much and read it in one sitting. Paranormal romance and shapeshifter genre fans should too. Eleri Stone is an author to add to your 'to read" list.

"Child of War – A God is Born" has it all and more.

The "Of War"-series picks up in part I of this II-part sequel when Ares and Alena try to settle down on Olympus and wait for the birth of their son.

Have you ever met Damien? Raven makes him look like an angel. This new little god causes trouble before he is even born.

Haunted by prophetic visions along with a body and mind that are starting to betray her, Alena struggles hard to enjoy what should be a happy and blessed occasion. The relentless hostility from the other Olympians make her yearn to be back on their cozy island home, far away from all the bickering and backstabbing that makes up Life on mighty Mount Olympus.

Knowing of Zeus' unabashed hatred for Alena and the Celts, Ares becomes convinced Zeus is causing these visions and the breakdown of Alena's mind. To appease his Father, the God of Gods, Ares enters into a wicked blood pact ensuring the safety of his wife and unborn son. A pact that could cost the God of War everything he holds dear.

However, once the boy arrives, it quickly becomes clear Raven may be the most powerful and cunning Olympian ever born. Outwardly despised by Zeus for his Fey blood and his filthy Celtic mother the seeds of rage and doubt are planted in the Raven's mind by a very willing Apollo.

As Zeus, Apollo, and Aphrodite plot against the new family, bit by bit the true pasts of the Olympians and Celts comes to light, the battle begins for Raven’s mind and soul and for the ultimate control of Olympus.

BRILLIANT AND CREATIVELY WRITTEN!

WOW! WOW! WOW! This second installment to the “Of War” series is absolutely brilliant and creatively written. The story captivated me from the first page not with just the smooth writing style but with how visualized the characters came alive on the page. I felt like I was literally there experiencing every action and emotion right along with them. Lisa Darling has definitely weaved and defined a more humanistic world around these Mythical Gods. She has captured an unimagined life style into how and why these gods and the paranormal creatures such as the Fae/Fey exist.

The story is full of action and emotions such as jealousy, hatred, love, lust, revengefulness, and conniving deceptions along with lots of WTF moments. I can definitely say I have a new outlook towards Zeus, Apollo, Aphrodite, Ares, Eros, Poseidon, Hades, and Athena. Their characters are literally selfish and gluttony-priggishly gross when it comes to mannerisms in eating.

The love between Alena and Ares is definitely tested as Zeus, Aphrodite, and Apollo weave their conniving schemes to rid Alena and her half-breed son Raven. I developed hatred towards Aphrodite and just wanted to reach out, slap her and ring her neck. The erotic scenes in this book are very explicit, shocking at times, and sensual at other times. The story consists of and or has exposure of Rape, bondage, ménage, anal sex, sex toys, and orgies.

Alena and Ares son Raven will totally blow your mind. At sometimes he was cute and had me laughing and at other times I wish I could of reached within the book and beat the crap out of him because of the evilness and cruelty in his personality – definitely a Wolf in Sheep Clothing!

The ending left me in shock as the cliff hanger made me realized how addicted I have become of this series and now I will be jonesing until January 2012 when the 3rd installment in this series “Child of War – Rising Son” comes out. Overall, the entire story was very enjoyable and interesting. I highly recommend this to all mythology lovers.

Werewolves as the good guys?
By Dani Harper, www.daniharper.com, author of Changeling Moon, Changeling Dream and Changeling Dawn.

Hollywood and history has done the werewolf a great disservice by painting him as a monster, an out-of-control killing machine ruled by the cycles of the moon.
What you may not know is that it hasn’t always been this way. Before the religious leaders between the 12th and the 16th centuries decided to lump werewolves in with witches and condemn them all as evil servants of the Devil, werewolves were often seen as neutral beings, good, or even benevolent.
A group in Italy was known as the Benandanti, which means “good walkers” or “those who go well”. They practiced white magic and claimed to travel out of their bodies while they slept for the purpose of battling evil. Both male and female members of the group took part in this four times a year, and as spirits they commonly took the form of wolves, although they might assume that of other animals as well. Specifically, they used their wolfen form to fight demons and witches to protect their crops, and if they won, there would be a good harvest. If they lost, their crops would wither in the fields, and many of their children would die as well. It was also said that the Benandanti were
said to be able to contact the world of the dead, and to protect the road between the living and the afterlife.

In the 1300s, John of Nuremberg relates that a priest was lost in the forest and came upon a campfire. There he found a wolf sitting upright like a man. The wolf spoke to him and entreated him to come and deliver last rites to his dying wife, as they were both Christian. The priest was at last persuaded and the wolf led him to a house, in which lay another wolf, a female. The priest administered the rites and saw her emerge from her lupine form to that of an aged woman who died soon after. The husband, still in wolf form, was so grateful for the priest’s ministrations, that he led him safely through the forest to his destination.

In the 12th century, a poem relates the story of Baron Bisclavret, a man who happened to be a werewolf. His wife learns his secret and hides the clothing he needs to return to human form. Bisclavret runs to the king, who is out hunting, and kisses his boots. The king is so impressed with the wolf’s behavior that he takes him back to the castle with him. Everyone at court marvels at the wolf’s gentleness and nobility, and the creature lives freely among them. Eventually, the wife comes to the castle with her new husband and she is attacked by the wolf. Rescued, she is forced to tell the king what she had done to Bisclavret, and to produce the clothing that will allow him to change. She is banished and all that was Bisclavret’s is restored to him by the king.

The Vilkacis of Latvian and Lithuanian lore was a benevolent creature, usually a wolf that had once been a human being. It often tried to participate in singing and dancing whenever there was a celebration and sometimes brought treasure to the party. Werewolves in Scotland were often of a type called Wulvers. The creatures are known for having kind hearts and only wanted to live in peace. They were known to leave fish at the door of widows and poor families. Sometimes their presence indicated that money or some other treasure was hidden nearby.

In my new paranormal series from Kensington-Brava, I’ve created a world in which the werewolves live as humans among us, hiding in plain sight. They call themselves Changelings and they regard their innate ability to become a wolf at will as a gift. Such a unique power can also complicate their lives, however, particularly when love is involved. Are my creatures “good”? One of the Changelings’ friends sums it up in an upcoming release, “Honey, there are good and bad individuals in both species.”

Moonlight Temptation by Stephanie Julian

Title: Moonlight Temptation
Series: Lucani Lovers Series Book Four
Author: Stephanie Julian
Source: Requested Review
Genre: Erotic/Paranormal Romance
Authors Website: www.stephaniejulian.com/
Format: PDF
Length: Novella

Evie Simmons has magical powers she can’t control, she’s living in a house that isn’t hers, and her best friend is a seventeen-year-old werewolf. It’d be hilarious if it weren’t just so damn depressing. Add in the sexy shifter she can’t keep out of her mind and his hot-as-hell friend and it’s a recipe for disaster.

Dr. Dane Dimitriou knows Evie has had a hard time adjusting to her new life as part of the Etruscan magical community—almost as difficult as his denial of his feelings for her have been. And he’s got the perfect cure—his best friend, Ryan Maguire. Easygoing Ryan is the complete opposite of stick-up-his-ass Dane. He can act as a buffer. Dane can get close, but not too close. Yeah, good luck with that.

Together, these sexy men may be just what the doctor ordered for Evie. And the doctor himself may discover the cure for what ails him has been waiting all along.(less)

Dee's Thoughts:

Evie is a survivor. Now she faces the challenge of controlling her powers, but her biggest challenge is excepting what two gorgeous alpha males want to give her, themselves.

Dane is a control freak, know it all and he is completely in love with Evie. However, Dane feels his dark, rough and sexy personality is not all Evie needs. Ryan is fun, easy going and sexy as hell. Dane knows his best friend has the rest of what Evie needs. Together they make the play to have Evie for themselves, forever.

I found this novella HOT! It was to short though, I needed more. The story line was excellent and the romance was sigh worthy. However, I find Evie very selfish for keeping both men for herself. Lol!

FYI: There is some explicit m/f/m action that may cause excessive sweating. ;-)

Interview with paranormal romance author Caris Roane + giveaway international

Please welcome paranormal romance author Caris Ronae here on Bitten today!!

Laurie-Hello, Caris! I want to thank you for letting me pick your brain again LOL. First I have to know who’s the couple in book 4? You’re killing me with the cover because so far all of your covers have men with wings and this cover has a woman with wings, so who is it??? PPPLEASSEE!!

Cairs-You should know by now it takes so little to prompt me to share anything about my Guardians of Ascension series.  Book #4, which is BORN OF ASHES, is Warrior Jean-Pierre and his woman, Fiona, who you have already met in WINGS OF FIRE!  I can hardly wait for you to read the fourth book, because of all my warriors, Jean-Pierre is the most tender.  He also has a killer French accent!

Laurie-Why did you choose to write romance?

Cairs-It’s all Jane Austen’s fault!  She may be considered a literary icon, but for me she told great romances!  The truth is, I’m a sucker for a happily ever after story, one in which the hero and heroine have some serious growing to do but once they get there, the passion is amazing and you have a real belief that this couple is going to make it over the long haul.

Laurie-What was the most difficult thing you had to do in writing this series?

Cairs-Raising the bar again and again!  By book #3, I could see how easy it would be to fall into the trap of repetition.  So, even with some of the usual elements I include in each story, like ‘spectacle’ or  ‘bonding elements’ or ‘preternatural power’, I found that it became critical to change things up with every book and to make sure that each story had plenty of surprises for the reader.  So, yeah, keeping things fresh and moving forward in interesting ways has been the most challenging.

Laurie-What was the easiest thing you had to do in writing this series?

Cairs-Well, actually, to be quite honest, *blushing*, I think it’s been the love scenes.  Once I have a strong feeling about my hero and heroine, the scenes where they are together in a romantic, physical way just seem to flow.  But what’s been so interesting to me about each couple is how different they are when it comes to the bedroom.  It’s been a surprise and an absolute delight.

Laurie-As you know I love your World of Ascension series and I know all about the hotness that you have going on in the books *still fanning self*, but I am sure I have a few followers that knows nothing about your series, so would you tell them a little about it?

Cairs-Here’s my Guardians of Ascension soup-stock recipe:  TAKE a band of hunky vampire warriors with wings, ADD heroic women with emerging power in need of protection from the enemy, FOLD IN desperate situations because the villainous Commander Greaves is intent on taking over both Mortal Earth and Second Earth, THEN ADD a world of six ascending dimensions and SPRINKLE LIBERALLY with heinous death vampires who must survive on dying blood or perish.  Finally, GARNISH with one snarky, profane, Amazonian woman, who is extremely fashion-challenged, but who serves as the Supreme High Administrator of all of Second Earth.  Serves:  unlimited!

Laurie-Do you have a favorite hunky warrior yet? If so who?

Caris-My favorite warrior is always the one I’m writing at the moment, so that means I’m totally into Thorne right now.  But when I go back and read the stories of the four preceding him, I’m right there, in love with each all over again!  So the real answer is no, of course not!!!  No favorites here!

Laurie-Now, on to the love scenes *clears throat* no, I’m not going to ask how you prepare for them, nope so not going there LOL. I want to ask do you have a favorite love scene between a couple in this series? I know each couples are different when it comes to these scenes and as you write them they become a part of your life in return they really stick in your head and heart, so I’m hoping you have an extra special scene that really stuck with you.

Cairs-Well, it’s not that it’s my absolute favorite love scene of the series, but it’s one that surprised me in the funniest way.  I had finished WINGS OF FIRE in November of 2010.   But I didn’t work on the revisions until the following March, so I’d been away from the book for awhile.  I’m reading along, and I get to a scene where Antony says, (P. 233) “I’d ask you to open your eyes and look at me, but I have something different in mind.”  (This is the love scene that takes place in the turret room.  OH, you’re blushing again!  Well, you asked!)  But here’s my point, when I read that sentence after four months away from the book, honest-to-God, I had no idea what Antony was talking about.  I couldn’t remember what I’d written!   So, I read on completely anxious to find out what Antony was going to do to Parisa!  I thought that was pretty awesome because it meant that when I originally created that love scene, I was soooo in the moment, that I just went with it.  I think it’s a great scene because he coaxes Parisa to use one of her special powers!  Man-oh-man, I wish I could bestow on all your readers even one of these paranormal adventures!  Wouldn’t that be amazing!

Laurie-What’s been the best thing that has happened since you became a writer?

Cairs-Meeting people like you!  You’ll probably think that’s cheezy, but it’s really true…assuming of course that you’re not asking about the writing itself, which is also an amazing experience.  But what I’ve truly come to treasure are the people I’ve met along the way, those wonderful people who have extended themselves to me in super-generous ways, whether expressing their delight in my work, or whether it’s a fellow author who can commiserate on the darker days, or fans who can’t get enough!  That kind of interaction and feedback has been awesome!

Laurie-Can you give us a sneak peek of what’s to come? Anything juice?

Cairs-Oh, boy, Laurie!  I’ll refer back to the answer I offered earlier when I said it’s all about raising the bar!  When I began Thorne’s book, I wanted something really special that would take this wonderful man from a place of despair and rage, to one of tremendous growth, and that’s exactly what happens to him in OBSIDIAN FLAME.  I mean, I love where he ends up soooo much on every possible level!  But it’s with his woman that I’m pleased the most, because they have a new shared power that takes their passionate love  to a whole new level…*growwlll*!  I’ll take a risk here, and share a couple more details.  As you know, in my series, deep-mind engagement is part of the experience between a warrior and his woman and I’m sure you know how great that is for them, how much pleasure it brings them.  But in Thorne’s book, their shared emerging power takes place within each of their minds and I describe that power in great detail.  But low and behold, that power has another application.  Without going into too much detail and ruining the surprise, I’ll just add that Thorne is able to enter this new power of hers, just as she can enter his, and the result is absolute FIREWORKS!

Was that juicy enough?!?

Wrap-up:
Today, I’ll be giving away a signed copy of the winning commenter’s choice of:  ASCENSION, BURNING SKIES or WINGS OF FIRE! Giveaways is international!

Finally, thank you, Laurie, so much for having me here today!

A Magical Return by Serena Shay

Title:A Magical Return
Author:Serena Shay
Source: Author request
Genre:  Paranormal, Erotic
Length: 60 pgs
Release Date: 06/20/2011

The Loss

Conleth “Cole” Douglas, warlock and vessel, needs a miracle. A destructive force has taken hold of his town and it will take more than just he and his magical Other, Cole, to eradicate the Evil. When an attempt to open his lover, Emterra, to their shared destiny fails, Conleth and Cole take extreme measures to stop the rising darkness. Their only option: take it, and themselves, into another realm.

Emterra “Irene” Azzurra, untapped witch and vessel, has given up on finding her own happy-ever-after. Devastated by the loss of her one and only love she becomes disinterested and remote, closed off from a life without Conleth. Even her job as the mayor of the dying town of Douglasville, MO, fails to sustain her, until she gets a blast from the past…

The Return

He’s back, alive and whole, but he didn’t come alone. The evil they’d hoped to contain in a distant realm has returned with him and is out to finish the job it started. There can be no failure this time, the now middle-aged, Emterra must accept her Other or doom the town to an agonizing death.

Skeptical of his sudden homecoming, Emterra is afraid to hope that his return could be true. She balks at the idea of opening her heart to him again. Especially when he looks like the same young Goth from ten years ago and tries to convince her she’s sharing skin with a magical being.

Can Conleth prove his claims of magic and the Others to be true? Can Emterra allow herself to believe in love and his wild claims? Or will the returning Evil finally swallow this town and all its inhabitants into the deepest realms of hell.

I'm not sure where to start for this review. I have mixed feelings. Overall, it was a good read, but I had a few issues that didn't work me. First, let me try to make it easier to understand. The characters are Conleth, Cole, Emterra and Irene. Conleth and Emterra are real people, Cole and Irene are their "Others". Conleth needs Emterra's help to defeat the evil that almost took over the town 10 years ago. They are the only ones that can do it , but Emterra has to accept the Other inside her first. With the little time Conleth has to convince a very skeptical Emterra that she has the power within to do the job, it still might not be soon enough.

Before I say what issues I had with this short story let me say that I think the author's writing is a great start and knowing that it will improve over time and future writings I look forward to reading more. With that being said here we go. The details where juicy and delicious and never crammed so it flowed very nicely, but introducing a multiple personality character can be tricky to begin with. Maybe a short story isn't the time to do it. I was just getting to know the main character when suddenly I was reading another name. I thought it was a misprint at first because they each talked about themselves in the first person interchangeably and the names were similar. Which is understandable, but WHAT?

This is strictly a personal preference, but I'm not a fan of characters sharing there minds with another person or being inside their head. It's confusing and hard for me to get into especially during a sex scene. No matter the good stuff, and there was good stuff. When you have a third or fourth party bumping around in the way that's too many heads for the pot. Now, the more hands the better, but you shouldn't have to argue with the "Other" in your head for control of your body especially during making out! I think the part where the story lost me was when Cole took over Conleth to help Emterra relax sexually so Irene could break through Emterra's mental barriers. Conleth, who couldn't feel to enjoy the moment, had to unwillingly watch himself, with Cole in charge, get Emterra off.

Like I said the good stuff was there and the short story is still worth taking a break to read, but when Conleth lost his control to Cole and Emterra lost hers to Irene that blew it for me. I was just getting into the scene and accepting the whole "Other" concept when suddenly Conleth talks about not being able to experience Em's pleasure with her. How does he think she would feel if she knew it wasn't the man she pined over for the last ten years touching her, technically speaking. I recently read another book, I won't mention the name, but it was by an established author from an ongoing series where that scenario was part of the story. It is still one of my least favorite books of the series.

My Review:

This second in Conn's Shadow series is filled with vampires, a vampire slayer, demons, wizards, a Fae prince and an unlikely romance. I think this paranormal romance is actually better than the first book in the series.

Nikki, born a vampire slayer, has "super hearing, super speed, and super strength ... [and is] immune to most vampire magic" but can be killed as easily as any normal human. She's after the vampire that murdered her brother, Deadly Moon, rumored to be the most deadly of the ancient vampires turned by Dracula himself.

Damon, the 400 year old enigmatic vampire from book one, is intrigued by the petite, beautiful slayer. He is not the usual type of vampire as Nikki finds out. He refuses to let himself be drawn in by her, a human who will age and die leaving him to mourn for eternity. But he can't help but watch over her.

When Nikki first meets Damon she is appalled to find herself attracted to him, that she lets him kiss her. A vampire! The chemistry between these two is off the charts hot.

WB, formerly of Pentim's clan, who we met briefly in book one as well, took over the clan after Pentim's death and made it a bunch of thugs who are threatening the safety of all vampires by not being discriminating and careful. Damon knew he and Chad should have killed him when they had the chance. Now they have a major problem.

Clara with the strange "scenting" power, also from book one, returns with a small part in this story. Chad, the lead from book one makes a cameo appearance.

Claudy Conn does an excellent job of making this a stand alone story while incorporating some of the characters from the first book and introducing us to several new characters. Ya gotta luv an author who can work in a reference to Stephen Hawking in a paranormal romance. {grin}

The war is still brewing and now the fae are becoming involved. Can't wait for the next book in the series. I hope to see more of Chad, Shawna, Damon, Nikki and others from these stories in future books.

This is another one I couldn't put down and read in a single sitting. I got so caught up in the action I was sad to see it end. Fans of the paranormal romance, urban fantasy and vampire genres should enjoy this as well.
