Interview with author Susan Edwards

I had the opportunity over the past few weeks to read and review the first four books in Susan Edwards "White Series" and enjoyed each of them. Susan graciously agreed to an interview so that we could get to know her a little better.

Would you tell us a little about yourself?
Sure. I live in California with my husband and mother. I’m an animal person so I have a household of cats including two 9 mo old kittens who are my babies. I recently rescued two Chiweenie pups and love all my “babies”. I also have rats and a couple hamsters.

Where do you get your inspiration for your writing?
Inspiration comes from all around me. From nature, pictures, people, TV, you name it. I can look at a picture and have it suddenly tie into a book I’m writing which happened recently. Anything can trigger a connection for me.

Out of the books you’ve written, do you have a favorite hero or heroine? If so, who and why?
I love White Wolf and Jessie. Jessie was a lot of fun as I was and still can be just as rebellious as she is. But I also loved Jeremy and White Dove. Their book was a lot of fun to write.

What was it about this period of history that inspired you to write about it?
I think the Native American culture touched a chord within me. I’ve loved the research, the writing about it and I think one of the best things is, is that many of the beliefs and attitudes are applicable to life today. Writing in this time period has opened my eyes to much of life today and to many areas where we are very imbalanced. It has encouraged me to a more balanced way of thinking and living.

Do you have a hobby besides writing?
I like to bicycle, hike and garden and am starting a 26 foot medicine wheel garden in the spring. I also knit and crochet but also cross stitch and quilt when the mood strikes. And of course I read and spend way too much time on the computer.

Other writers will often branch out to different worlds, what has brought you back to this one over and over again?
Again, it is a world that speaks to my heart. There is also a lot to be explored, especially within the paranormal world which I’ve really gotten into with my writing and will be branching out.

Do you have a process in your writing routine?
I usually put on some music, and sometimes I will light some candles. Otherwise, it is just sitting down and writing with some futzing around. It usually takes me half an hour to get writing.

What advice would you give a writer when it comes to researching such a culture or time period for their writing?
Be as accurate as you can be. Take the time to learn the culture and even be able to think it as though it was your own. You have to be able to feel what it was like in your time period.

What are some of your favorite author’s and some of your favorite books you’ve read?
Oh there are way too many here. I read Nora Roberts and love some of her trilogies a lot as well as her Death books written as JD Robb. I love the Harry Potter books, as well as the Imager series by LE Modesitt and David Eddings series Belgariad. Haven’t read his other series yet. I also love Christine Feehans series.

If you could ever interview one historical person and write a story on their life, who would it be and why?
I would love to interview women in the Native tribes and actually experience some of their culture minus the wars and other hardships. I think there is a lot we women of today could learn and apply to our own lives.

Title: 'Til Death Do Us Part (an adult retelling of The Little Mermaid)

Blurb:

The day you get married, is supposed to be the happiest day of your life. Dreams are made of such things. But I forgot. I could blame the witch if I wanted to – in fact I did, for quite a while after – but the fault can only lie with me. Being with him made me so happy – so very, very happy – that I chose to forget. I chose amnesia. If I had had any foresight into how my flippant choice would ruin him, I would have saved him the heartbreak. I would have forfeited my knowing him, my own selfishness, lived forever in the pain of unfulfillment, if it meant he could be spared....

When you love someone so much that your heart aches without them in your life, would you give up everything you've ever known to be with them? Would you give up your identity?

This is exactly what Aria did. But her sacrifice comes at a great cost, with startling consequences. With no memory of her previous life, she's forgotten what she really is, and who she's left behind: a jealous, possessive God, who's finally found her, and will stop at nothing to keep her heart from ever straying again.

In this dark and erotically passionate retelling of The Little Mermaid, can a love founded on humanity, stand the passing of time, an angry sea-God, and even death itself?

Spellbound and Seduced! Excerpt and Giveaway

My new novella, Spellbound and Seduced, is set in the Scottish Highlands over Christmas in 1822. Laurence Connaught is heir to a remote Scottish castle and has come north to see his inheritance when he is caught in a snowstorm. Jura Mcnair is a witch. A two-hundred-year-old curse promises that any man she loves is doomed to an early death. Determined to break the cycle, Jura lives alone and untouched until she rescues Laurence. The two are beguiled by passion and bewtiched by their feelings for each other, but unless they find a way to break the curse there can be no happy ending for them.

The story opens with the burning of Jura’s ancestress two hundred years before, and as with most of my paranormal tales, it has at its heart a combination of Scottish history and folklore. There’s a long tradition of fey wives (herbalists who often have a ‘gift’) in the Highlands which continues to this day –fortunately, we stopped burning them at the stake in the early 18th Century!

Spellbound and Seduced is a Christmas story with lots of cold snow, hot sex, and a few spells along the way to Jura and Laurence’s special Christmas feel-good happy ever after.

Excerpt from Spellbound and Seduced
Jura handed him a glass. “Drink this. It will ease your headache. It’s whisky and a tincture of herbs, perfectly harmless.”

“Uisge beatha,” he said, trying to ignore the curve of her breasts which were on a level with his chin, the way her bare leg brushed his. “Water of life. My mother taught me that.” He took another sip, and then another. The drink did not seem to be having the soporific effect that spirits usually had on him. Instead he felt over-sensitised and at the same time light-headed, reckless. He stretched to place the whisky glass on the floor, and his knuckles grazed the slope of Jura’s bottom. Her hair tickled his skin. He could not resist wrapping a thick auburn tress of silken hair around his hand. “You are the most beautiful woman I have ever set eyes on, do you know that? I’m still not quite sure you’re real.”

“That’s strange, because I was just thinking that you must have walked out of my dreams,” Jura replied. Her heart was racing. Her voice was no more than a whisper. She did not think of resisting. She did not even remind herself that there would be no harm.

“I’d like to be in your dreams,” Lawrence said, slipping his arm around her waist, pulling her to him, trapping her between his knees, “but I can think of an even better place I’d like to be.”

His slow, seductive smile was captivating. Jura had had no idea that temptation could be so delightful, wispy as spun sugar, heady as whisky and just as potent. Intoxicating. She leaned her hands on his shoulders, curling her fingers into the warmth of his skin beneath the fine cambric of his shirt. “Where?” she asked, quite mesmerised, unaware that her mouth was tugged into a smile just as sensual as his. “Where is it you want to be, Lawrence?”

“Inside you.”

“Oh!” Her knees gave way. She sank to the floor, unbelievably aroused by his words.
“I’ve shocked you.”

Jura shook her head. His legs cradled her waist. “Not shocked. Only….” She trailed her fingers along his leather-clad flanks. She tilted up her head to meet those blue, blue eyes. “Tell me. More.”

Lawrence caught his breath. Her smile was smoky. It stoked the fire which raged in his gut. He pulled her closer, burying his hand in the silken mass of her hair, inhaling the scent of her as he placed his mouth right next to her ear. “I want to taste you. I want to breathe you in. I want to feel your skin on mine. I want you to sheath me.” His thumb found the sensitive spot at her nape. Her breath was warm on his cheek. Her heart beat faster than his, he could feel it, through the bodice of her dress. He licked the lobe of her ear, tasted the skin behind it. “I want all of you. Me inside you. You inside me.” He was astonished by his own words, spoken without thinking, yet spoken with utter conviction. “Say you want me in the same way. Skin to skin. Flesh to flesh. Say it, Jura,” he said, urgent now.

“I want you. Skin to skin. Flesh to flesh.” She spoke without hesitation. She heard the words, breathy, as if she had been running, as if someone else was speaking them, with no thought for the consequences.

Guest post with author Terry Spear

Please welcome romance author Terry Spear!!

What Happens When You’re Bitten by Paranormal Characters?

By Terry Spear
Taking it literally, if you’re bitten by a vampire, it depends on what could happen. You might live or die, but you can’t turn into one, not unless you take the biter’s blood in return.

Werewolves are different. If a werewolf bites you, you’re a werewolf. Of course, that’s not the only way to become one. If you have werewolf parents, you’re bound to be a werewolf, too. But what if only one parent is a werewolf?

That’s the problem with exceptions. There are always exceptions to the rule. Genetically speaking, it can go either way. :) That means that an offspring could have an interest in all things wolf (if this sounds like you, you might have a werewolf in your family roots), might even have more enhanced senses like a wolf, or not, and well, it’s hard to say when it comes to genetics.

You see, a werewolf and a human shouldn’t be able to have a child. Period. But in the Jurassic Park movie, the line that says something to the effect of: “Life will find a way.”…yep, that could certainly work in a werewolf/human mix too.

What about jaguar shifters? In the upcoming shifter series I had to consider how jaguar shifters came about. The problem with a jaguar’s bite is that they have the strongest bite per inch than any other animal alive. So it presents a problem. If you’re bitten by a jaguar, you’re probably not going to become a shifter. :) Or anything else. So I had to come up with another way to get around that little problem.
And that’s the fun of creating paranormal characters.

I saw a comment made by someone on another blog about how ghosts could be real, but not shifters.
Why not? In my world, they are! In fact, you just might begin to look at a helpful hunky guy and wonder…is he one? Could he be an alpha male werewolf in human disguise?

Sure! Anything is possible. You know how often something that is myth or legend is finally proved real.
But even if you don’t believe in the paranormal, it’s fun to fantasize, just the same.

In Dreaming of the Wolf, Alicia Greiston doesn’t believe in the paranormal. All she believes in is getting her man—as in she’s a bounty hunter and she’s going after the men who killed her mother. Oh, sure, she loves vampire stories, and she even thinks of them when suddenly she’s standing on a pitch dark street and a shadow moves toward her in the blackness. First thought that comes to mind is vampire. You know how it is. Just like when lightning knocked out my electricity in my apartment complex when I was taking a shower, eyes pop open (automatic reaction) and soap in eyes. Did I think: Power outage? Of course not! I thought PSYCHO!

So that’s what happens to her. For a brief moment she thinks of the paranormal, until reality sets in, and it’s much worse. Hey, a vampire could have been one of the good guys if he’d come to see her instead.
Let’s say you do meet up with this really cool Jake Silver kind of guy. And he’s really a werewolf! What is the worst thing that could happen? You tell me for a chance at having him all for yourself!!

Thanks so much for Bitten by Paranormal Romance for having me here today and celebrating with me the new release of the 8th book in the series, Dreaming of the Wolf!
