Special three day event with paranormal romance author Dani Harper (DAY 1)

Welcome to a special event with guest romance author Dani Harper. This is a three day event so make sure you come back for the next two days;)

Changeling Celebrations with Dani Harper – Part One

In my new shapeshifter series, the Macleod family are Changelings, able to become wolves at will. The family escaped from Scotland during the wolf exterminations and started a new life in northern Canada. (This book trailer tells their story:  http://www.daniharper.com/VIDEOS.html)

Their celebrations became a blend of old and new, of traditions from both countries. Connor, James and Culley  Macleod volunteered (okay, they were drafted) to talk to us today about their memories of Changeling celebrations:
______________________________________
“When we were kids, our family always observed the Solstice on December 21st,” James began. “And—”
Culley interrupted at once. “We should explain that we were kids a couple centuries ago. Changelings are pretty long-lived.”

“Right, it was a long time ago. And we celebrated Solstice, the return of the Light,” continued James.

“We still do,” said Connor. “Zoey and I held a family celebration at the farm. We built—”
James built the bonfires,” he said. “Helped by my wife Jillian and my kids, Hunter and Hailey. Took us a couple days to haul all the wood and stack it into the right shapes but it was worth it.”
“The bonfires were enormous,” Culley said. “But the fireworks were my favorite.”
“There weren’t supposed to be any fireworks. Someone –” James looked hard at Culley “—put them amongst the stacked logs.”

“And it really jazzed up the celebration.”

“The celebration didn’t need any damn jazzing.”

“We celebrate Yule too.” Connor carried on quickly, obviously hoping to distract his brothers. “Scotland’s ancient Celtic traditions got mixed in with Scandinavian customs brought by invading Vikings.”

“Like this one,” said Culley, yanking a handful of James’ white-blonde hair. “He’s the only one in the family with this coloring, so we figure he’s a throwback to the Vikings.” He had to duck fast to avoid his brother’s big fist.

“Remind me again why we brought you?” asked James.

Connor rolled his eyes and carried on. “Yule or Yuletide gets celebrated in late December.  It was said that the Norse god, Odin would disguise himself in a hooded blue cloak, and visit the earth in the twelfth month. His pet wolves, Geri and Freki, would wait outside as he would wander through the towns, sitting at firesides and listening to the people. Whenever he saw there was need, Odin would leave a gift of bread or coins.”

“In some of the really old stories, Odin flew through the air on his magical eight-legged horse, Sleipner,” laughed Culley. “Does that sound like Santa Claus or what?”

“Dad used to tell that one,” said James. “Mostly I remember going with him to cut a Yule Log. It had to be enormous because it was going to burn continuously for at least twelve days.”
Connor nodded. “Fireplaces were pretty huge back then, so they could hold logs like that.”
“Weren’t the ashes good for something?” asked Culley. “Mom used to spread them in all her gardens.”

“That was to ensure a good harvest,” said James. “The ashes of the Yule Log were supposed to have all kinds of powers.  You might keep some as a protective charm. Some people used the ash as medicine.”
“Yuck. Let’s talk about something more appetizing, like the food.” Culley closed his eyes and smiled as if he were back in the old family kitchen.

“Later. We promised to meet the gals downtown for Christmas shopping,” said Connor.

“Shopping?” James looked pained. “I’m sure I’d remember promising that.”
Culley was more concerned about the interview. “But we haven’t told them about all the food. And that’s the best part!”

“Tomorrow,” said Connor. “We’ve got a date to come right back here to Bitten By Paranormal Romance tomorrow and tell them the rest!”

Review 'Til Death Do Us Part by Dianna Hardy

Title: 'Til Death Do Us Part (an adult retelling of The Little Mermaid)
Author: Dianna Hardy
Source: Author Request
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Format: Novella
Release Date: November 21, 2011
'Til Death Do Us Part (an adult retelling of The Little Mermaid)
"The day you get married, is supposed to be the happiest day of your life. Dreams are made of such things. But I forgot. I could blame the witch if I wanted to – in fact I did, for quite a while after – but the fault can only lie with me. Being with him made me so happy – so very, very happy – that I chose to forget. I chose amnesia. If I had had any foresight into how my flippant choice would ruin him, I would have saved him the heartbreak. I would have forfeited my knowing him, my own selfishness, lived forever in the pain of unfulfillment, if it meant he could be spared...."

When you love someone so much that your heart aches without them in your life, would you give up everything you've ever known to be with them? Would you give up your identity?

This is exactly what Aria did. But her sacrifice comes at a great cost, with startling consequences. With no memory of her previous life, she's forgotten what she really is, and who she's left behind: a jealous, possessive God, who's finally found her, and will stop at nothing to keep her heart from ever straying again.

In this dark and erotically passionate retelling of The Little Mermaid, can a love founded on humanity, stand the passing of time, an angry sea-God, and even death itself?

Review
This is a short story, about 20 or so pages. It picks up where Aria has just married her "prince" and is happier than she has ever been. However, her happiness is not to last. Poseidon, the one she was betrothed to, is looking for her and the witch's spell, which made her human, will be broken as soon as her husband gives her his heart.

This is a beautiful yet tragic story of true love and sacrifice. It is definitely not your Disney, everybody sing and be merry version. Aria wants nothing more than to spend the rest of her life loving Simon. But after the spell is broken she is forced back to the sea to spend a miserable life married to Poseidon where she is nothing more than his possession. Mermaids are cold, unfeeling people and she misses the warmth and kind hearts of the humans. She may have no control over her life anymore, but she refuses to be completely broken. She will not surrender her human nature. Aria believes the worst fate was losing her true love. However she soon learns the worst is yet to come when she is offered a chance to have him again or to leave him be with the life his has now. That is when she learns the true meaning of love.

Guest author and give away with Dominique Eastwick

Please welcome romance author Dominique Eastwick!

Thank you so much for having me here today, I have been a follower of this blog for so long it seems surreal to actually be here. (Really I am not sucking up it’s true)

I am thrilled to be here to discuss my newest book and my first paranormal romance. The Wiccan Haus Book 1; Shifting Hearts. The series came to me while driving up to Massachusetts this summer in what I can only describe as the real Carmagedon. A drive that should have taken me 10 hours tops took me closer to 18 with delays and accidents the whole way up. Even the gas stations on the Jersey Pike were out of gas that goes to show you what a mess the day was. Any way between screaming at the red lights, pounding my head on the steering wheel and praying my children would stop fighting in the back seat, the idea formed for a spa up the coast in Maine (where there wasn’t a single car) where people could go to be healed.

By the time I reached my destination the idea had fully formed with the twist that I didn’t want to be the only author to write for the series. Yes I would have plenty of stories in my head but I wanted to see what other authors could come up with as well. So The Wiccan Haus Shared World Series was born.

First step getting the first book written so other authors could see and feel the world.

Second step getting the guidelines written so each author would know what they could and could not do. For instance, anyone with special powers are referred to as Para’s or that there are four owners of the Wiccan Haus Spa and who and what they are. These little things are what keep the world unique but the same through all the books.

I have to say I am just as excited about the stories coming in as I was to finish my own. I hope readers will get to know the residence of the Wiccan Haus and Love them the way I do.

If you are an Author interested in writing for the Wiccan Hause series please contact me at WiccanHaus@musapublishing.com for a copy of the guildlines.

New author Spotlight with romance author J.R. Pearse Nelson

I like finding new to me authors but what I like more is to find a new author that has just published or self-published their book. So, I've came up with a small interview in showcasing the new authors I find. I hope you get inspired in trying there book.

J.R., would you please tell us a little about yourself?
I’m an Oregon girl – born and raised, and still going strong. I don’t believe I’ll ever live anywhere else; it’s a part of my heart and soul. I live in Portland with my husband and two small daughters, and the family dog. Writing is my passion, and it has been my life-long dream to write fiction for an audience. I love all things magical, and find a lot of magic in the world to love.

How long have you been writing?
I’ve always been a plotter. I have childhood notebooks full of character names and stories (as well as names for every pet imaginable). I later made up fantasy and science fiction stories all through adolescence and college. At the end of grad school in 2004 I got serious and started writing my first novel.

What is your first published book?
Tribute is the first novella in my Children of the Sidhe paranormal romance series. It centers on old Irish deities and their descendants in the modern day, as an ancient enemy of Otherworld resurfaces. I just released the second novella in that series, Vessel. Paranormal romance makes for really fun writing. A fast pace, with snappy dialogue and sexual tension – what’s not to love?

Why did you choose to self-publish?
Independent publishing is so friendly. Smashwords, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, All Romance Ebooks – they all make it really simple to publish in an ebook format. The growth of ereaders and changing marketplace makes self-publishing an attractive option. I also like the creative control aspect; I choose everything from where to make my books available to the cover. The flexibility to cross genres and provide different lengths is also great for a writer like me, since my stories tend to emerge at novella length and I can’t stick with a genre to save my life.

What was the first thing you did when a publisher let you know your book was accepted to be published?
I’ve never actually heard that from a publisher. I’m sure it would be a lovely feeling that would put me on cloud nine, but I can honestly say it’s not what I’m seeking. J

Who/what is your writing muse?
Life! Sometimes it’s something I see on the news, or a conversation about current events. A place I visit, a story I hear – big storms and natural disasters really get my mind working. Most of my stories build in my mind, sometimes for years, until I can’t contain them there and must spill them out on a page.

What is one piece of advice you would give aspiring writers, other than to not give up?
Don’t aspire – write! Once you’re regularly putting pen to page or fingers to keyboard, you’ve earned the writer title. That’s the good news. The not-as-good news is even if you’re a great writer, with natural talent, it will still take years of honing your craft before you FEEL like a writer. I honestly believe everyone has it in them, but you have to love it enough to work through the learning process. Also, while writing is largely a solitary art, don’t let that translate into figuring everything out on your own. It’s easy to find writers to network with, and the community is very much worth the effort.

What are you working on next?
Right now I’m writing Queen Witch, the first book in an urban fantasy trilogy about a family of witches that serves an immortal who does not have their best interests at heart. I’m also outlining the next two Children of the Sidhe novellas. I hope to publish all three of those books in 2012. My list of ideas is bordering on ridiculous – I think I have enough ideas to keep me busy for ten years. Like I said, I’ve always been a plotter. J
