Reading Historical Romance at a Paranormal Blog

Reading What?

I’ve read just as much historical romance as I have paranormal romance this past year.  (At least that is what the pie chart shows on my Goodreads stats.)  So you can see why I was a little bit leery when Laurie first asked me to become a reviewer for BBPR.

First of all, I was a rookie when it came to reading romance; I barely had my toes in the water.  Secondly, writing for me is like banging my head up against a wall; I get nowhere fast.  And the biggest one of all, I’m the slowest reader E.V.E.R.  Go ahead, ask Laurie – she’ll tell you.  I savor my books.  When everyone else has read three or four – yep, I’ve read one.  But I’ve made it one year here and she hasn’t kicked me out…yet.  *throwing confetti*

Getting back to the historical thing.  I don’t know what it is that attracts to me all of those eras:  Regency, Victorian, Highlanders, Georgian, whatever.  I’m sure there’s a list somewhere detailing which era fell within what time constraint.  (If you know where it is, could you please point me in the right direction.)  I’m sure it has a great deal to do with the awesomeness of the brilliant authors and the worlds they create.  Or maybe it’s what lies beneath all those clothes!?!

Then again, I’ve noticed with the historical romance I’ve read over the last few years, all of my favorite heroes are alpha men.  Well, there may a smidgen of beta, but not very much.  There is something to be said about a devilish rogue needing to be tamed.

I blame it all on the subliminal influences from the 1960’s.  Yes, My Lovelies, I am a child of the era and now known as a Baby Boomer.  Who knew that decades later I would fall in love with reading romance *those trashy* novels.  I’ll read just about all of the romance genres with historical and paranormal being the top two on my list and I owe it all two these two gems:

"Hungry for those good things........."

*sigh*

DAYUM, Mark Lindsey is fine!!

It has come to my attention that another fine, vampire, paranormal romance is being released very shortly and wouldn’t you know it, #shitdamnhellfire I’m four or five behind in reading that series.  And, AND, to top it off, my second most fav BDB, Tohr, is getting his book and I’m two behind there as well #shitdamnhellfireagain.  Well, I guess 2012 just might be the year paranormal outweighs the historical.

I just couldn’t help myself….a helluva way to end the year and start a new one.

Note to somebody:  Need to make a new Paul Marron video – many, many book covers to choose from!

Guest romance author Claire Ashgrove!

The Lure of Darkness

One of the things that enchants me, as an author, about paranormal romance is the ability to draw on dark characters, dark motives, and dark plots.  If you think about it, that’s the dominant theme to most paranormal romances – vampires, werewolves, demons… darkness everywhere!

Why do I like the dark?  It gives me more freedom to work with intriguing set-ups.  My characters don’t necessarily have to fit what we would find acceptable if we were face-to-face with the hero or heroine.  I also find it’s a perfect breeding ground for suspense, as well as sexual tension.

On January 3rd, I have two different titles, under two different pen names releasing, and both incorporate my love of the darkness, although I incorporated that fascination in different ways.

In the first, my paranormal romance IMMORTAL HOPE, I played with the age-old battle between darkness and light.

Templar Knights, fighting against the most unholy, Azazel.  Only I twisted it a bit more and fell deeper into the lure.  My knights must not only battle the darkness surrounding them, but that within as well.  Each time they fight and kill, their souls become compromised, pushing them further away from their sworn path and into the control of Azazel.  Their salvation?  An ancient prophecy promising the seraphs return.  Only, the modern-day women the knights encounter may not be so willing to accept their preordained fate.

CENTURIES AGO,
Templar knights defied the archangels and unearthed the copper scroll, revealing the gates to hell. Cursed for their forbidden act, they forever roam the earth protecting mankind from evil. But darkness stalks them, and battles they fight bring them ever-closer to eternal damnation. One promise remains to give them salvation – the return of the seraphs.
Embittered by his purpose, Merrick du Loire must honor an ancient pact and bring peace to his cousin’s soul. When he stumbles upon history professor Anne MacPherson, he discovers she possesses a sacred artifact that marks her as a seraph. Duty demands he set aside his personal quest and locate the knight she’s fated to heal. As he struggles with conflicting oaths, Anne arouses buried hope and sparks forbidden desire that challenges everything he’s sworn to uphold.
Anne has six weeks to complete her thesis on the Knights Templar. When Merrick takes her to the Templar stronghold, he presents her with all she needs—and awakens a soul-deep ache, he alone can soothe. Yet loving Merrick comes with a price. If she admits she's destined for him, her gift of foresight predicts his death.

With IMMORTAL HOPE, as the plot took shape, I was able to really dig into unique character traits and flaws.  Not only with my main characters, but my secondaries as well.  I was able to craft some truly gruesome scenes without jeopardizing the overall, and, given the nature of the players, add seduction in on top of everything.  The constant threat of danger left plenty of room for action, and the underlying goal of Azazel’s, plus some incidents that happen amongst the Knights themselves, allowed me to maintain a level of suspense throughout.

Dark romance.  Dark characters.  Dark settings… yum!

But as I said, IMMORTAL HOPE isn’t the only place you’ll find my fascination with the darker side.  My Berkley Heat release, STRIPPED (written as Tori St. Claire), also allowed me to play to my heart’s content.

With the Black Opal series, I was able to look at another side of mankind and play with my favorite character type – the morally ambiguous character.  It’s erotic romantic suspense, not paranormal, but the dark themes are still very present.  After all – who could really say they’d want their children to grow up and become elite killers?

Natalya, the heroine in STRIPPED, challenged me on many levels, as did her counterparts within the Black Opals.  I had to redeem her, to the best of my ability and her character design.  Which isn’t easy when she’s as proficient at lying as she is with a gun.  When she’s acted against her own gender in the name of National Security.

But here, the dark underworld of sin and pleasure was a perfect means of creating suspense, of keeping the action alive, and, of course, maintaining the erotic elements.  Really, I can’t think of anyone who could understand the meaning of pleasure better than a Black Opal, who could cease to exist at any given moment.

It was a fascinating write, a challenging write, and I think the part that I found most enjoyable was cracking Natalya open and revealing the one thing she’s kept hidden away – her heart.

Body of secrets…
As a member of the CIA’s elite, Black Opals, Natalya Trubachev must live a lie, working undercover as the lover of Dmitri, a Russian mob boss. His business is trafficking vulnerable Las Vegas strippers overseas for twisted sex games. Natalya’s business is to blow the ring wide open and bring down Dmitri and his American contacts. But the stakes are raised when she learns that the next target is her own sister Kate, a dancer in the famed club Fantasia. Only now does Natalya realize how personal her mission has become, and how far she’s willing to go to complete it.
Body of lies…
The manager of Fantasia is Brandon Moretti, an undercover detective who keeps a close eye on his girls, and an even closer one on his sinfully sensual hire. For Natalya, working the club could be the break she’s been waiting for. But for Moretti, Natalya is a possible link to a killer. Only he never counted on her being so lethally seductive or so dangerous to get close to.  As every forbidden pleasure between them is stripped away, his own secrets threaten their security, but it’s Natalya’s that could destroy them both.

So what about all of you – what draws you to the darkness?  What is it about these vampires, these werewolves, these demons and the special ops with edgy backgrounds that makes you fall in love?

Let me know in the comments, and I will send one random commenter a copy of both STRIPPED and IMMORTAL HOPE.

Meanwhile, if you drop in on either of my blogs, you’ll see I have two virtual tours starting in January, and both have opportunities to win Amazon Gift Cards.  Throughout the month I’ll be talking about each series, introducing you to some characters, and discussing what drew me to the ideas even more.  I hope I’ll see you there.

Thanks, Laurie, for letting me stop in today!

Lately I've been in a bit of a reading slump. I haven't wanted to look at or touch a book. (I know I know, who could ever live through such a thing?) So this book was my introduction back into reading again. I am so happy to say that it was one of those books I just couldn't put down. I am a huge fan of taking a relaxing bath and reading at the same time. When I first started this book I figured I'd read a few chapters while relaxing a bit. An hour later my husband came to tell me dinner was ready. An hour after that he came and pulled the plug to the tub. Thirty minutes later he took my ereader out of my hands and refused to give it back until I finished eating. As soon as I finished this book I picked up another. I just wish it could have been book tow of the series, but sad to say that doesn't come out until July. Oh well, I'll have to hold out until then.

Natalya Trubachev is a strong heroine that is trying her hardest to take down a human trafficking ring. She has spent far too many years trying to bring it down. As a member of the Black Opals, a secret branch of the CIA, she has done everything, but give up her own family to take it down. Unfortunately, just as she is about to hit a lucky break she realizes that this is something she will have to do after all. Her sister is the next target.

Natalya interested me from the start. I love love LOVE strong heroines. I also love when they are pitted against a hero that is just as strong, or in this case stubborn. Brandon Moretti, is a hard-assed cop that is just trying to protect the girls of the strip club he was placed as manager of when Natalya is hired and brings him to his knees. Ms. St. Claire did a brilliant job of matching the man characters together. Unknown to them they are both after the same people. Watching these two try and figure out their cases while trying to keep the other in the dark is just amazing. The chemistry between the two characters is electrifying. There are many and I do mean many very steamy scenes between the two of them.

I don't want to give too many details away because this story builds on itself and leaves the reader guessing to the very end on who is good and who isn't. I highly recommend this book to everyone looking for a good new read. It comes out the first week of January, and I can't want to get my pre-ordered paperback in the mail so I can read it again and again.

Special three day event with paranormal romance author Dani Harper (DAY 3)

Never Judge a Man by his Species…

That’s the premise behind my latest novel, CHANGELING DAWN, the third in my new shapeshifter series.  Tomorrow, December 27th, is Release Day!  WOO HOO!  I confess, I’m so excited, I don’t know how I’ll sleep tonight!  I’ve been looking forward sharing this book with my readers ever since I wrote “The End”. I feel it’s my best story yet!

It’s been a banner year for werewolves at my house. Or, as my characters prefer to call themselves, Changelings. Changeling Moon was the first in the series in May, followed by Changeling Dream in June. Readers were introduced to the Macleod family of shapeshifters. And if you’ve been following Bitten By Paranormal Romance for the past couple of days, you’ve gotten to hear from three of the Macleod brothers, Connor, James and Culley. In CHANGELING DAWN, you’ll finally hear from one of their sisters, as well as a hero that really stole my heart as I got to know him!

_________________________________________________________

RUN

Shadow and moonlight merge beneath her bare feet, the forest floor blurring as she flees the dogs and torches. Werewolf, monster -- those are the names given her kindby the humans who hate them.

HUNT

Kenzie Macleod has spent her whole life hiding what she is, and she’s not about to open up to any man, even one as powerfully attractive as wildlife expert Josh Talarkoteen. But legend says that a Changeling cannot escape the call of her true mate, even in the wilderness of backcountry Alaska.

MATE

An isolated archeological site, a terrified Changeling cub, a secretive research center -- as Kenzie and Josh face the ultimate betrayal, his obsidian eyes promise untold pleasure and hint at dark secrets of his own . . .

RT REVIEWS (Romantic Times) gave CHANGELING DAWN a wonderful 4 1/2 stars!  WOOT!

"This third entry in the Macleod werewolf family saga is the best one yet. Harper skillfully builds characters and situations that evoke empathy for the good citizens of both the human and shapeshifter species. The drama of the tracking and kidnapping of a young changeling child makes for page-turning suspense, while the main characters’ PTSD from childhood trauma and the Afghan war give them a great motive for their intense determination to rescue the little one.”

Here’s just a little light teaser (kind of like an appetizer!):

"I have no intention of shopping for lingerie with you."
"Well, I'm not keen on being seen in that department either. Unless of course, I get to pick out stuff that would look good on you—"
"No!"
"Then I'll wait in the food court with the rest of the banished males."

Check out Book One, Changeling Moon, and Book Two, Changeling Dream, while you’re there! There’s a book trailer that will tell you about the Macleods, and lots of other cool stuff.

Changeling Celebrations with Dani Harper – Part Two

As you may remember from yesterday’s post, the Macleod family of Changelings still celebrated plenty in the month of December in their new country, but they blended in old traditions from Scotland. Connor, James and Culley Macleod survived Christmas shopping with their wives and sisters in order to return to us today and continue sharing their memories of their family celebrations.

______________________________________
“Finally!” said Culley. “I’ve been waiting to tell them about the eats.”
“Why are you always thinking about food?” asked James.

“Why not? Food’s the best part of every celebration. Take Black Bun for instance – now that was a fruitcake. Stuffed with currants and wrapped in pastry.” Culley sighed happily.
“I liked the sun cakes,” added Connor. “They had a little hole in the center, and lines fanning outwards, representing the rays of the sun. It was some kind of Scandinavian tradition, but Scottish shortbread has been shaped like that ever since.”

“Shortbread tastes a helluva lot better. Those sun cakes were more like hard biscuits!” said Culley.
“I miss the venison stew,” admitted James. “There was no such thing as turkey for Christmas. Mom would make the stew with thick cream, and there’d be neeps and tatties in it.”
“Turnips and potatoes,” Connor explained. “And bacon – I remember she browned the venison with bacon before she made the stew.”

“Now I’m hungry,” said Culley.

James rolled his eyes. “You’re always hungry.”

“There was a lot more than eating going on.” Connor counted off on his fingers. “There were games and dancing, music and singing, and drinking. Quite a bit of drinking in fact. Among the adults, the ale and the whiskey flowed pretty freely.”

“Old Angus Mackinnon fell off his horse pretty freely too, as I recall.”

“We ought to talk about the decorating,” said Culley. “It was a big part of the celebration too.”
“All of us kids had to gather evergreen branches. The whole family would work at hanging them all around the house, inside and out,” said Connor.

“Evergreen boughs were hung above the windows and doors of the barn too,” James added. “And mistletoe was used as well – there had to be at least a sprig of mistletoe.”

“Devlin and I used to walk through the forest, looking up, trying to find the biggest bunch of mistletoe we could. Of course, that made it tough to see where I was going,” Culley laughed. “Ran right into a tree one time and knocked out a tooth.”

“You brought back a monstrous plant one year as I recall,” said James. “It had to be four feet across. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bigger one.”

“Yeah, and it took us half the day to climb the damned oak tree to get it down. That mistletoe had to be growing forty feet up. But I wanted a kiss from Jeannie Robertson, so I had to get it.”
“Mistletoe wasn’t just for stealing kisses,” said Connor. “That’s why it was on the barn as well as the house, to protect the people and the livestock. Mistletoe was said to keep evil away.”
James snorted. “It never kept Culley away,”

“And that’s what the season is all about,” Connor sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose as if he had a headache. “Putting up with – I mean, being with family.”
